I am not sure of the year of this motor, but I know it is OMC (Gale). I am hoping a similar Johnson/Evinrude exists. My model number is GG8850A. I would like to know what year it is and if a similar J/E model was made.

Now, the motor won't turn over. It cranks but will not fire. I am thinking that a tune up is in order, new plugs, wires, points, etc. Any other tips for trying to getting her running?

Thanks!

I don´t know that exact engine but after a quick search on google I fund something .

1960 60 hp Sea king (Gale division of OMC)model #GG8850A. It runs off a magneto and is a v4

What do you have ? the engine turns over ?
Does it have any spark ?
Does it have compression ?
when whas the last time runing ?
Weet/dry spark plugs ?
Is it complete , not any missing parts ?

Sorry there are more questions than answers :)

If the engine turns and does have spark + compression try spraying some fresh gas/oil mix in to the carburator , if you got any sign of life try cleaning/rebuilding carburator + fuel pump .
If there are no spark ... clean/change points ( 020 ? )
Clean all electric connections , if you still can get any spark , get yourself a manual ,you will need it .

Try a search on the forum ,see what you find .

Re: Sea King V4 60 HP

My info indicates the 60 was built from 60 - 63.
Displacement is the same as the E/J 50 and 65
70.7 cu in.Im pretty sure they all share many parts. 67 and earlier, point gap .020,J4C plugs at .030.Any differences year to year are probably
shared.Though not necessarily directly year to year.

The engine appears to be complete. I haven't got a starting battery, but I do have a deep cycle I could use. I suppose that would work. Or I could steal my truck battery.

The point gap is confirmed on the engine itself.

It was running about a year ago then sat for a while. It cranks, but does not try to fire. I am not sure the guy I bought it from new what he was doing, though. I will try again, check for spark, etc.

Allright, I checked the spark and compression.

Compression seems good, at least on the cylinder I checked.

No spark, again on the cylinder I checked.

I ordered a manual, and next I will clean or change the points.

Looks like it was maintained. The points have fresh electrical connectors and the belt to the distributor looks fresh. At least now, I know where to begin.

I believe that motor uses a belt driven magneto, the plug wires come out the bottom. Corrosion buildup around the rotor and the cap is very common. Tune up parts are still available at J/E dealers.

That is right. It is belt driven and the wires come out of the bottom. I will check the cap and rotor too.
