Hi everyone.. this is my first post on iBoats... so please be gentle. I've got an issue with my 1976 Sea Ray SRV180. It ran good right up until a couple weekends ago when it stuttered and stalled, and now it won't start again. I am getting very little voltage at the coil, and think that I have a bad ballast resistor on board. My problem is, I don't know where to find the original one. Replacement parts online appear to be a purple wire with a ceramic block. I'm not 100% I am looking for a purple wire though. Bot ran fine all last summer and the 2 times I took it out this spring. I finished up restoring the interior over the winter and it's really looking good. Any help some one might be able to provide would greatly be appreciated.

Here are some photos of the boat...

Hello PX4855,

Welcome to iBoats....

First of all, have a read of this post -> http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=220416

Then come back with what engine, year, and serial number....

Cheers.......

Gotcha.. it's a 1976 Sea Ray SRV180. Engine is a 165 HP 4.1 L straight 6. Serial number on the boat is SER5402M0676.

The original ballast resistor is part of the white wire running to the coil, it's a 'resistive wire'. Merc do sell a replacement for it, or you can just run a wire from any power wire (active only with the key ON) to an 'off the shelf' ballast resistor, to the coil....

Chris.........
(P.S. we'd like the serial number of the engine, not the boat)

Thanks so much achris! I'll do just that and get back with you! In the mean time, I'll get that serial number to the motor!

If you're interested the Merc replacement part number is 84-94227A2... about $24 worth....

Cheers.

Something you might find useful is to put the engine year, model and serial number in your signature... That way you don't have to remember it each time you start a new topic...

Thanks achris! I added the info I have to my signature. I need to get the serial number to my engine. I also ordered the replacement part and should have it in a few days.

Well, I got the ignition wire in the mail last week, ($20 from Ebay) and installed it last weekend. (Just now getting around to posting about it).

According to the wiring diagram in the manual I have, All I had to do was connect it to the #5 pin on the wiring harness plug next to the engine.

The instructions were fairly simple, just tape off the old existing wire so it didn't short out on anything. I also ended up replacing the coil and the points as a precautionary. I think this fall, I'l going to put an electronic ignition in it. It's running a lot better than it has since I bought it. As soon as I get the chance, I'm going to take it out on the lake and put it thru some paces.. Thanks for all the help!
