Re: Sea Ray Seville Bowrider: a project boat

Not to get off topic but is your avatar the corner canyon I think it is? anyway I saw some of the replies from the real pros in the I/O section. Don is the man he has a LOT of experience and really knows his stuff. You might want to look around for a wrecked boat that is parting out stuff or one that is blown up(engine) and parting out you may be able to save alot of money if you can find one. That is a very common drive so do some comparisons and see. I did the same thing with the seloc manual so don't feel bad lots of people do it they aren't terrible just not as complete as a oem.

Snowmobile/ski season is just winding to a close and so boating season is just around the corner I am just about to do my summerize. Good luck with your boat hope it all works out well and you can get on the water soon.

Utahboatnut...

The real Corner Canyon is that beautiful little canyon down in the southeast corner of the Salt Lake Valley. Corner Canyon is really just a state of mind for me. Anytime I'm in 'cornercanyon' I am doing alright.

Thanks for the tip, I really hadn't thought about that. I need to tear her down first, since she has been sitting 7 years and the PO had no indication of trouble I am hoping (praying) that parts will be minimal.

The outdrive came off last Thursday, engine came out on Saturday and Sunday I pulled the transom plate. Lower third of transom is rotten (of course - why would I think anything other) I will be gutting everything from the interior.

I will post the pictures soon.

Thanks for the help I need all I can get.

Re: Sea Ray Seville Bowrider: a project boat

I thought that was the one, I grew up in east Sandy and spent alot of time in CC loved it. Even got stuck up there in winter in my jeep in 4-5 feet of snow had to walk hours to get out and get help.

My last boat needed about what yours does it was a big project, but not too bad if you can devote alot of time to it. I had a 85 Wellcraft 20' cuddy but it had a 235 evinrude so that made it much easier. The stringers arent bad nor is the transom and floor. I cant say on the motor mount but should be straight forward just match the old one if possible. I would also reccomend keeping an eye out on glass supplies and try to buy in bulk it will save you in the long run. Do lots of reading here or even in books devoted to the subject of boat rebuilding it helps. set realistic goals so you don't get overwhelmed tackle smaller projects at a time instead of the whole. If you use poly resin be cautious of how quickly it will set up in the heat, can make for alot of wasted materials and time. Good resporator is a must when grinding, harbor frieght tools can work well and save $ to. If the wife is in to it have her be working on other stuff while you are busy with your projects, ie have the outside all waxed, buffed ready to go, help picking up supplies(give detailed list), painting of trailer etc. it can save you alot of time in the end. When you do the transom I would cut the outdrive hole out it helps to bond it to the outer skin when you can get clamps in the center as well, plus you can see in and make sure everything is fitting right. That is an important step to get just right, make sure to have it dry fit perfectly mix up the resin and go for it you don't really get a second shot on that one. good luck and keep at it...

Re: Sea Ray Seville Bowrider: a project boat

I used polly First glued transom together with it and shot in drywall screws to clamp it.After bonded i fit it up so it had a bit of side to side.Had cloth cut and stapled to boat side of wood .Wet it with 5 to 10% acetone then wet boat put together and bolted through outdrive mount holes.Let it sit for a day and drilled corners.Cut hole with sawsall..Cut to the small side.Tailer up with a 4 inch grinder.I saw a thread where a guy used 2x6 to clamp his and warped the back of his boat.I didnt want that to hapen to me.Also didnt want to be off one side to the other when it setup.Lots of ways to do it just be ready when you mix up your resin

Sounds like you have taken the plunge and are in this for the long haul.
On the demolition and rebuild of your structure some of my experience might be helpful.I jumped into my project in Nov and plan to finish this week!
I took some pics along the way.

Re: Sea Ray Seville Bowrider: a project boat

The first shot is of the motor mount bolts from the starboard side. Think there may be some rot in that mount? (that's a rhetorical question)

Next you can see our swamper (our great 11 year old boy) lowering the engine. He is a great helper.

And some pictures with the engine out and of course as most of you already knew: the transom is rotten. I am grateful for all I have read here because if I hadn't learned from all your comments and pictures I would now be trying to get all the rotten wood out with a spoon rather than doing it right. (I hope I can do it right).

Thanks for all your help. I will continue to post the progress. Still hoping to get her in the water this summer, maybe by the end of June?

Re: Sea Ray Seville Bowrider: a project boat

Thanks I will do my best to keep it coming.

Last night we got everything off the starboard deck and half the deck up. Hopefully tomorrow the rest will come out so I can start grinding. WooHoo! (Can you tell I am trying to sound excited about grinding?)

It appears that there is plenty of space for foam within the side walls above deck, rather than refilling the area under deck and seats. That would allow for the area under the deck to be completely clear for moving water to the bilge while creating much more storage under the seats. I am thinking that the plywood stringers could be shaped like an old masonry bridge: flat top with arched openings evenly space as the base. Thus allowing any water clear passage to the bilge.

What do you all think?

I added a drai to the stringers as you described at the lowest point in the hull. I think multiples would be a waste of energy and would compromise strength

Nice progress so far. i just realized we are really close to the same point in our restores, and we have both set nearly the same goals for finishing. i'll be keeping tuned so be sure to stay up on your updates ;). and like you i'm seriously doubting i'll be done in may lol. only time will tell.....

Re: Sea Ray Seville Bowrider: a project boat

In the midst of grinding and I have found the perfect outfit for me: tyvek hooded suit, face shield, respirator, cotton/latex gloves, baby powder on anything that might be exposed. Finish up with a loofa in the shower, no itchies. One more night of grinding and I should be ready to start working on the stringers.

In our Sea Ray every piece of wood I removed appears to be 1/2" plywood or built up from 1/2" plywood. I was amazed to find the front motor mounts are hollow!? Just a 10" x 6" x 8" plywood box covered in fiberglass on five sides. The wood was so rotten I couldn't tell if the top was a solid piece of wood or two pieces of 1/2" plywood laminated together. Not a crack in the mounts, fiberglass is awesome.

I have all but abandoned the idea of building the sundeck frame out of aluminum square tube. With all I am putting into this boat this is not the time to buy and learn how to use a new mig rig. Perhaps when I am ready to create a new swim platform. hmm.... ski and wake board racks too.... ;)

I will post more pictures in the next couple of days, thanks for everyone's help so far. Frankly, I am having so much fun working on this boat I may need to find another project boat when I am done, (this might be a good quote to throw back at me in a month or so).

Re: Sea Ray Seville Bowrider: a project boat

must have been a common design. mine was about the same. like yours i have no idea what the wood was underneath. but even though the wood under was completely destroyed, the glass on the mounts was in good shape.

Yep. That looks familiar.

The good news is I think I need a lot less structural framing for the lids on the sundeck with a good epoxy and glass wrap.

Re: Sea Ray Seville Bowrider: a project boat

That last pic looks all too familiar. Last summer I spent HOURS with a grinder and sanding disc crawling around in one of those. I done some work on one for a guy. He had the engine and floor out. I grinded the whole inside of the hull smooth and put an extra 4 layers of glass of the whole thing. Then I had to put in the new supports for the floor and glass those in. Plugged and glassed the hole in the counter where the stern drive was and put on a block for an outboard (150 etec). Put in a new floor, U shaped bench around the back, new bulk head for the cabin, new seats, pretty much a whole new interior. I even built in a battery box, a place to mount his hydraulics, and a beer cooler underneath a hatch in the floor, lol. Was I ever glad to get that boat finished, lol.

I'm currently building an 18 footer for myself. 100% fiberglass, the only wood is a piece of 3/4" plywood in the counter. I just picked up a 90 Evinrude tonight for it.

Good luck with your project. You've definitely got your work cut out for you. Once you get it done you'll know exactly what you have and I'm sure you'll enjoy it for many hours to come.

Re: Sea Ray Seville Bowrider: a project boat

Here are a few more pictures (Wife and Mother of my great kids is enjoying a little alone time this morning, festivities to begin shortly). Though I haven't posted work is progressing nicely.

The first shot is overall, but the port deck and stringer was so rotten they came out almost at once. Next just a shot of a hollow motor mount, the strength of the fiberglass is changing my views on boat construction. We would never build a home like this, in a boat, less wood is good. Right?

Next shot is all vacuumed out ready to start grinding and then an aft and forward view of the progress.

The stringers were so rotten I can't use them as templates for new. Everything is coming out, nothing worth saving in my view. The plan is to dry fit essentially everything before we start epoxy and glassing. This way I hopefully will be able to plan and rough in for new wiring etcetera before I get too locked in to add the fun toys later.

More pictures soon with dry fit stringers, deck and new above deck walls for containing above deck foam.

Thanks for everyone's comments, I need all the help I can get.

Corner looks like you are progressing right along . I will have to agree with one of the other posters . While you have the driveline out replace all of the wearable parts especially the engine coupler ( they are cheap compared to having to pull it all apart again ) . I am getting ready to pull the whoooooooooooole driveline out of my Larson to replace the engine coupler which failed on the previous owner thus how I got a boat in pretty good condition cheap.

Re: Sea Ray Seville Bowrider: a project boat

I just picked up the exact same boat (87, in red) for a song and a dance..engine started right up, in the process of re-doing the interior. Also planning on building a sun deck and bench seat instead of jump seats...have you found any plans to build such a deck? Thanks and best of luck to ya
