Happy new year fellow boaters!!!!:)
I have been having a problem with the walkthough windshield on my sea ray, and I would like to address it over the next month or so. it has a hinge on the left side, so you flip ot open and walk through. My problem is that when you go to close it it wont close completely unless I bang on it, its like the width of the window has stretched!
there are two support rods on both sides of the permanent windshields. I was thinking that maybe they have been bent( pushed) out of wack, I thought that maybe these rods could be adjusted.
has anyone had similar problems??? anyone have any ideas?? I'm almost to the point of taking it to the sea ray service dept.

Ayuh,.... Generally, it's caused by wood rot, under the dash, allowing everything to sag, 'n fall outa alignment...

My first thought is a deck and stringer problem too. Not too bad. Your weight is causing the deck to flex, and in the process the opening for the walk through has closed just a touch. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

All my walk through windsheilds did that after years of service. It was a result of getting old, and some of the console wood and screws holding the frame in become stripped, rotted and loose. Like others said if it's not too bad, dont worry about it. If it's bad then maybe rebuild what the windsheild frame is attatched too.

It's generally a problem with alignment, as Bond-o said. Unfortunately, it's generally not just caused by problems under the dash or console. It's generally a problem with hull alignment because people tend to let it get to that point before addressing the issue.

As you've stated, you've been banging on it to get it to close properly. When something is out of alignment, even slightly, that is the time to address the issue. The first time you notice a problem, however slight it may seem, address the issue. Don't wait for it to get to the point where it's something which cannot be overlooked. It could turn out to be something which seriously compromises safety without your realizing until it's too late. That may come at a really inoppertune time. I won't start listing examples.

Your problem may very well be nothing more than what was described by Bond-o. To confirm, you can compare Sea Ray's specs to actual measurements. If all this is beyond what you want do yourself, you can bring the boat to a Sea Ray dealer as you had previously mentioned.

However you choose to address the issue, it needs to be addressed.

Had one of those. Mine did the same thing. Top RH corner was tight. I think it was caused from walking up onto the (dash) and causing it to deform from the weight. When you open the door to go below ( if you have one ), look between the door frame and dash and see if there is some kind of support in the center of dash where the weight would be when you go through. There is usally a peice of piece of styrofoam there for support. It is nothing to worry about.

Re: sea ray walk through windshield problem

i have seen this on hundreds of boats....

i am beginning to think that over the years the fiberglass starts to change shape lightly......i could be wrong....but ill find out.

one of the Quick fixes is to add a shim between the hull and the frame...

there are bolts that hold the frame in place. these are under the dash, these can be loosened......then you can shim without it being noticed.

bond-o is correct that in a lot of cases....it is the symptom of much larger problems.....
however.....it doesnt mean that your hull is toast.

Re: sea ray walk through windshield problem

My 04 185Sport does that at times, when it does I know it is time to check the screws on those supports for the stationary part of the windshields. Mine will loosen which lets the frames get out of alignment. Usually it is the one the center is closing to, not the hinge side. I am going to work on mine, the holes have worn now so I need to remove all the screws and fix the holes so the screws will stay tight.

Re: sea ray walk through windshield problem

thank you all for your replies!! there are some good points and avenues to pursue. I will keep all informed on my progress. I am confident that there is no rot, and right now I am thinking of the shim idea, we will see. thanks again!!

the center winshield folds open from rt to left. so that when open, it rest's on the left windhield( pass side). upon closing the center windshield, the frame rubs on the right side windshield. making it difficult to close securely.

Re: sea ray walk through windshield problem

I had several boats do the same thing. When boats are shipped with the windshield unattached, you're at the mercy of the rookie kid to install it at the dealer. Likely he'll strip the screws.

What I did was refasten it properly with larger diameter screws and problem solved.

Of course, it could be a rotten hull, but you can check (and hope) the windshield is merely loose.

Could it be due to being improperly supported while on the trailer

I "fixed" a few now by adjusting the keel rollers on the trailer up to take 95% of the boat's weight off of the bunks.... fixes em within just a couple months... sometimes the rollers need adjusting again a few weeks in as the boat starts to change shape

My windsheild did the same thing. Like bondo and oops said, it usually points to a bigger issue. It is easy to deny the obvious, as I was in the same boat. Check out me Sea Ray thread.
