In CT., Sea Tow doesn't seem to be as expensive as in Florida. I have a $300 towing rider as part of my boat insurance policy. In CT., I never went over the $300 policy limit for a tow (15 mile average). I hear that in Florida, a tow of 15 or 20 miles goes much higher. If that's true, I'll buy a yearly Sea Tow policy for $119. Is there a limit to how far they will tow for the $119 policy? What happens if I need a tow from 40 miles out?
Stalker

I like the peace of mind of being a Sea Tow member. For me, it is worth every penny.

In Massachusetts sea tow or boat U S tows you from up to 50 miles and by that I mean 25 miles north or south and 25 miles out to sea from your home port. Generally speaking if you are thirty miles then you pay the hourly tow for 5 miles before your tow package kicks in.Where I live the hourly tow is about $140.00 per hr.
And I agree with Ralphs statement.

It's like having triple A

I have Boat US and I am TERRIBLY dissaspointed in them. This past season my engine blew a piston 500 feet from my dock.I was able to get back to the dock under my own power. Theoritically, this was an "on the water" incident. When I wanted them to tow me to a launching ramp so I could haul the boat for repairs, they said they would give me "a reduced rate" and the 3 mile tow would only cost $240.00! Gee.... thanks guys- what a deal! This year I'm switching over to Sea Tow. They may cost a little more but the peace of mind is worth it!

Re: Sea Tow or NO!

Let me tell you a little story about Seatow. Two years ago I was heading out for a fishing trip in the late afternoon. About 18 miles out, my thermostat stuck and my engine quickly overheated. It got so hot, so fast that it apparently heated the ignition coil and fried it. Try as I might,I couldn't get the engine to start again.
I called Seatow for assistance and was immediatly put in contact with the Seatow captain operating out of Pt. Judith, RI. He was already on a call but, after appraising my situation, told me that he would be there as quickly as possible. A very short time later, he showed up as promised. He very quickly had me tied to his boat and began towing me back to Watch Hill, RI. I dock my boat in Stonington, CT, which is out of his jurisdiction. He contacted the Seatow group operating out of Mystic, CT and handed me off to them at the RI-CT line. The Seatow Mystic lady captain picked me up and towed me back to my slip all the way up the Pawcatuck River. She put my boat right back in its berth with incredible expertise. After doing all the paperwork, she told me that, had I not been a Seatow member, the tow from Block Island to Stonington, CT would have cost $1500-$1800 dollars. That $100 dollar membership was the best money I've ever spent. I won't go out on the water now without Seatow. My experience with Seatow has been more than satisfactory. They conducted themselves very professionally and were also very courteous. Do yourself a favor and spend the money for the membership. You won't regret it. :D :D :D

Remember one thing about all these questions and responses that you get from any one post. You get only one side of the story as we only get one side of the story from you.
We listen to you We take you at your word and we try to help you. Sometimes we only get half truths. And sometimes we have to read in between the lines.
I used boat U S and only have good things to say . They didn't screw up application and when i used them they helped me out tremendously. The person at the deak at West Marine screwed up.
When I joined for 100.00 the person at the desk ask if I wanted to spend the extra 14.00 dollars for the membership to West Marine I didn't know that i had too,so I said no I thought that the 100.00 covered the tow package.
Well when I broke down this summer and needed their assistance I called on my cell phone and I wasn't covered because I didn't pay the extra 14.00 to join west marine Well luckly i had my receipt and after explaining it to boat U S they cleared it up and everything was fine . Thy towed me 17 miles with no extra charge.

Re: Sea Tow or NO!

This weekend I ran aground between Taylor's creek and Cape Lookout. Since it was a holiday weekend, it took them a while to get there since the main Captain was about 15 miles offshore, and the on call Captain had to be called. Once he got there I was off the bar so fast it was incredible. The bill would have been $395.00, but was free due to the membership. Second time I have had to use them and both times saved me more than the membership. I would not leave the dock without a membership. Thanks SEATOW!!! :)
