After more than 5 years of ownership, I finally splashed today. Frankly, I was a bit nervous as I basically hung a motor I got from eBay about 4 years ago. All I did to it was replace the fuel pump diaphragm and water pump. It ran fine on muffs, but as we all know, that's no guarantee i will perform under load. The Hudson was very choppy so I didn't have the nerve to go to WOT, but it ran right up to 4000 RPM without a hiccup, and jumped right up on plane. Speed was 25 - 27 MPH on GPS.
There were a few glitches, though. The depth reading on my Humminbird 385ci was a little erratic at speed (need to adjust the transducer position), and at one point, it shut down entirely and wouldn't restart for a while. I noticed the voltmeter was reading around 15v but the high voltage cutout is supposed to be 20v. Once it came back on, the box for depth was completely empty. It started displaying again after I disconnected the power once I got home. The regular speedometer didn't work; I discovered the pitot had had kicked up. But i wasn't even looking at it anyway. Right before heading in, the clip on the kill switch broke so I had to disconnect the switch. It was probably original to the boat so I can't complain!
This being Monday, I figured I would avoid the usual launch ramp follies, and I did when when launching. However, I had to hang out for about 20 minutes waiting for some clown who was in such a hurry to launch he used the side of the ramp that is supposed to be for retrieving only. After blocking the ramp he proceeded to take his sweet time. He backed down as I was making my approach so I had to hit reverse. I then had a hard time getting out of reverse. Grr!
Sorry for the long post, but I'm so psyched to finally be back on the water!
