Seacast-what about the drain plug area???

Unbelievably, due to favourable exchange rates and my lack of carpentry skills, I am considering trying seacast for my transom replacement in the UK. I am a little confused however, whether or not my metal drain plug and self bailing outlet pipe will have any effect on the results as they are both made of steel. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Re: Seacast-what about the drain plug area???

I just done this job. I bought new brass drain tubes and poured the Seacast around them.I then let it start to setup and after a couple hours i just pulled the brass tubes back out.
The Seacast will not bond to the brass.
After the Seacast setup i gave it a couple days to cure and installed the brass tubes with 3M 4200.
You can hold the tubes in place with duct tape when you pour the transom.

Make very sure you work the Seacast down into the transom with a stick and kind of pack it down. Then use a rubber hammer and tap on the outside of the transom. That will release any air pockets.

Thanks Gary, actually, seeing your post marked (finished transom at last) was the thing that pushed me over the edge. I work in the civil engineering industry and am more comfortable with casting stuff outta concrete than I am with carpentry and glassing, lol! When we pour concrete on structures we get rid of any air pockets by using a "poker" (kinda like a dildo at one end and a 5hp honda at the other) I will probably use this to make sure of getting the mix to where it should go. I am actually from London, England and constantly see references on i-boats regarding these sealing products. (3m 4200??) Who makes this please as I need to see if I can either get it in England or find an equivalent. How difficult was it to pull out the drain plug after a couple of hours? Did you use some sort of mould oil when you inserted it? How much fibreglass and what type did you use to make good on the top section when "making good"??? many thanks

"3M" is the manufacturer.

It's marine-grade butyl caulking if you're going to hunt down an equivalent.

The drains pulled out really easy. Seacast does say to use a mould release wax but i did not have to.

I used some fiberglass filler to finish off the top.It was made by Evercoat, called Tiger Hair. Then i covered it with aluminum trim..

mmmm 5 hp dildo,my GF would love that...LOL!!:D:D

A concrete vibrator- a dildo
Hell that would work great, as you don't have to worry, with seacast, about the aggregates separating.

The only things I'm still a bit unclear about are
1) Do I have to cut holes in the inner and outer skins of the transom with a grinder in order to remove both the fittings or will they be screwed in from the inside through the plywood in the transom?
2) Is my link to my shareaproject page working and if not how can I sort it out? Is there a forum I should post on?

The brass drain fittings should just push out from the inside. Don't worry if you damage them. You can get new ones really cheap.

If you want to post pictures go to photobucket.com,upload the pictures then copy the image code from there and paste into your posts here..;)

Re: Seacast-what about the drain plug area???

Couldn't you simply re-drill the holes after the fact? Also, if Seacast is a polyester based resin, do you have to have a brass tube? Wouldn't a brass threaded drain plug and flange be better?
I am considering using it on my boat here, but on mine I would have three drain holes, one for the bilge, one for the deck level above the floor, and one through the splashwell, through the transom up top. They are all 3/4" plugs now, I will most likely use a threaded plug on the bilge drain, and a rubber lever on the deck drain, both my bilge and deck drains are below the water line, the upper splash well drain will only get a threaded plastic tube since the splashwell is removable on this boat.

When i poured my Seacast i filled the bilge drain hole.I wanted it nice and thick in that area. Then i re-drilled the hole and put the brass screw in drain in.The garboard style drain. The splash well drains got replaced with new brass tubes..
