Re: seaclops

Welcome to iboats. do you have a kill lanyard? they slip off. go to maxrules.com technical advice, there are electrical test there to test the switch box, and stator. sounds like you fried something electrical. also when starting a thread, put part of the problem in the title. seaclops tells us nothing. '96 200 no spark' would have gotten a far better response.

1996 200 carburated mariner no spark

Thanks tashasdaddy that was my first post I'm learning
No spark to any of the plugs boat ran perfect for 1 month then bucked a couple of times and then died very low hours. There is no mercury or kill switch
TRigger switch? key switch??? I can't see both switch boxes going at the same time but i am new to large outboards is it possible??? Any advice would be a great help.. I can't get a real service manual for a couple of days. SELOC manuals stink.

Re: seaclops

There should be a mercury tilt switch in the bottom/ back corner w/ black/yellow wiring. You should also have a kill switch with similar wiring. Disconnect the black/yellow lead from the switchbox and try to start it. Also check your ignition/ key switch. Clean up all the black grounds on the motor.

If these don't fix the problem then get out your multimeter/ dva and check the trigger/ stator. If still no spark --> switch boxes. Coils don't seem to burn out on these motors.

Re: seaclops

Thanks for the information Now my 1996 200 carb mariner has spark and runs great It was the key switch. Removed black/yellow wire from switch box
and i had spark. Chased wires back to the key switch. that was it. With the
backup of this site and a REAL mercury manual the outboard mystery is getting
easier.. I have been a master automotive tech for 27 years and outboards
always scared me. With the help of this site i just might change my profession, cars suck, I would much rather sea trial a boat then road test a car!!!

THANKS GUYS a happy boater

Re: seaclops

I agree with you there being a mechanic for a living is not fun, as a hobby its not bad but boats are more fun the atmosphere is different, being at the marinas
on the water, meet some interesting people, better than being stuck in a 14x20 foot service bay.
