Re: Seafoam and premix stalled

I ended up with the screws at about 1 3/4 turns, the middle carb is no longer dripping and it is idling at just under 1000 rpms. Thats pretty good no? When I spray the deep creep into the carbs it only picks up a few rpms from the middle carb, hardly noticable. Am I in good shape at this point?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike you have to remember that your dealing with a 2 cycle engine. The middle carb provides fuel and lubercation to two cyclinders. Dirty carbs are a killer. You still have a fuel delivery problem with the middle carb. Remove your carbs, remove any plastic on them and soak them overnight in carb cleaner. Blow them out with compressed air, give a coat of wd40 and reinstall. If that don't do it you'll need to get a rebuild kit. After you have your carbs working right then do the sea foam treatment. Afterwards you can use the deepcreep or sea foam mixed with the gas to maintain your clean fuel system. I would say you need to be idling at 800 rpms or a bit lower. But you really need it under 1000 rpms this keeps the stress off your lower unit gears when putting it in gear. Bottom line, if you don't take care of the fuel delivery problem now you'll pay $$$$ big time later. Have done a compression check? What's the compression of #3 cylinder?

I agree. I tried to get by with just cleaning the bowls, replacing the needles and seats and one float. The carbs need to be pulled and cleaned, cutting corners is not an option. My compression is 115-120 on one through five, I never managed to get the tester on number six.

I'm going to do this right. I think this inline is a pain to work on in comparison to the other outboards I have owned, but it sure sounds sweet.

I gave the carbs a good soaking and adjusted the float levels. During reassembly I managed to break one of the bowl cover bolts. Thankfully it was easy to get out. I'll try not to torque the replacement bolt tomorrow.

Ok, the carbs are back in after a good cleaning. It cold started on a bump of the key and quickly died. Oops, idle mixture screws turned all the way in. I set them to 1 1/2 turns and restart, engine wants to launch after starting, rpms way too high. Its getting late here so I thought that I would call it a night.

I just noticed that the carbs are not closed, I think the linkage between the carbs is off a bit.

Sound right?

Thanks,
Mike

Okay Mike, the carbs should be fully closed at idle. Now do the timing and sync procedure for inlines posted by Clams 1 June 06. I know those carbs are a pain, but now you know they are clean. Good Luck

Should I just loosen the screw and adjust the plastice linkage between the carbs to get them all closed? A the moment the top and bottom carb is mostly closed but the middle one is slightly open when at idle.

Thanks,
Mike

Re: Seafoam and premix stalled

I adjusted the linkage so that all three carbs close. I discovered the problem to be with the throttle cable needing adjustment. When the fast idle lever is put back down it does not move the distributer all the way back. If I disconnect the cable and push the throttle arm I can get it to idle at around 650rpms.

Since I had the cables off when I repaired the mercontrol I'm thinking they are poorly adjusted. I should be all set.

Thanks,
Mike
