Seafoam or Redex? What's better, or are they the same thing?

I can't get seafoam in the UK. No-one sells it that I've seen, but we do have a product called Redex that claims the same as seafoam with the same manner of uses.

Is this the same stuff (I've been using it for years) or is there something special about seafoam that'd make it worthwhile me paying shipping charges for some for myself?

This is a sort of "which brand of aspirin is best?" question.

Seafoam is good stuff, so is Redex. Seafoam has the advantage of hype.

Thank JB. Now I know I'm not missing out on anything-specially since I just managed to buy 2 litres of redex from my local Tesco garage for £10 when they put the wrong price on it!

The breams are truely in around the dancing ledge, although a little hit and miss on christchurch ledge. Plenty of tope and smoothies are in the solent. For info try www.pbsbac.co.uk a small boat angling club in poole.

Redex is great, does exactly what it says on the tin etc.
That's the only additive I'll use in anything though.

Re: Seafoam or Redex? What's better, or are they the same thing?

aha! someone whos brains I can pick!
What motor are you running on yours and how well does she go?
I'm gonna be trailering mine as it's cheaper than a mooring-though I've got to find somewhere safe I can leave the trailer while we're out for a few days at a time.

I haven't been out at all this year-the microplus isn't finished. Gotta install the VHF,echo sounder, rewire the whole thing and mount the motor yet.Hopefully it'll be all done by the end of this weekend. The repaint will have to wait til next year though-so she's gonna look a real mess for this season-still painted in canal boat colours and flaky paint.
I was using an old avon inflatable and a 12' speedboat last year for fishing so the couple of times I went to Weymouth were limited to fishing off the pier while the truck was parked up.Never have had much luck pier fishing though.

aha! someone whos brains I can pick!
Ooooh!I don't know about that my friend :0) I have got a Johnson VRO 70hp on the back of my Microplus but I am having a little bit of trouble with it at the moment, you can put that down to lack of TLC, but we are getting there. Just completely refurbished JILLY-AN-TU after 28 years of her original white/orange livery, she is now resplendant in diamond white and looks great. I asked the mechanic at the marina where I have my boat to have look at the engine, his initial report is good but at £42 + vat per hour is a bit over the top so No 1 son, who is a auto mechanic, is going to have a look. When the motor is top line she goes like a dream seeing off many of the pucker speed boats, we get some very peculiar looks as we coast by. LOL. I have owned this boat for over 28 years now and do not wish to change it in the forseeable future, mind you, they are like rocking horse droppings now since they stopped making them all those years ago.
I always trailered mine for the same reasons you gave, but now I have retired and am not totally fit the launch and recovery are beyond my capabilities now. To ease the costings my son and 2 son-in-laws and myself have quartered the cost so it isn't too bad. Where I park do a daily launch/recovery service which includes parking the trailer and also 1 vehicle, this, of course is at a charge. I am not sure how much but you can call them on 01305 782080 they are called Blue Water Horizons.
Strewth mate, this isn't a posting it's an epic.LOL never mind, you now know a bit more about me and my boat than you did 10 minutes ago.
Cheers my friend.
Geoff.

If you are planning to be out a few days at time, Cobbs Quay at Poole (although) charges £37 launch and retrieve but you don't pay for parking so it even out and the Quay is fairly secure as long as you lock up the trailer as you normally do.

If you would like to fish but your boat ain't ready, try the web site I gave you above, very often we have more boats than crews and wouldn't mind an extra pair of hands.

Yeah Cobbs are pretty good secrity but I didn't know they let you park free-that's good. It's £7.50 a day at baiter slip but security is a big issue and overnight parking isn't allowed. The offer of fishing is greatly appreciated too but I think I'll get my boat finished first.

Tyro, where on earth did you manage to get a 70vro short shaft?! I looked for ages for a 2nd hand shortshaft motor and had no joy-I ended up having to build mine out of a longshaft and 2 wrecks. It's a 50hp Mercury-running nicely now.I'm hopefully fitting it over the weekend. If you have a look at this post :- http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=26;t=003148;p=1#000010 you'll see a picture of my poor abused baby. It took me 3 days just to clean the sides and bottom off.

Time to work on her now-she's sat outside and waiting...

Tyro, where on earth did you manage to get a 70vro short shaft?!
I didn't my friend, I extended my transom myself, I raised it 9", must have made a good job of it as well because the survey said ' Transom has been modified and is in good order' I did it about 15 years ago when I purchased the motor and there is no sign of stress or movement in it.
Cheers.
Tyro

I'd be very interested to see how you've done that-it'd make life a whole lot easier.

Re: Seafoam or Redex? What's better, or are they the same thing?

I'd be very interested to see how you've done that-it'd make life a whole lot easier.

For Nos4r2, sorry about the delay in replying only I've been busy sorting her out. The engine is top line now after a good carb clean and a fuel leak fixed.
All I did to highten my transom was to obtain a length of high quality mahogany, cut and shape to fit the excisting tansom top and engine well walls, when a perfect fit was established all joints were sealed with waterproof sealer, I counter drilled the wood in 4 places and screw bolted it to the excisting transom, it was also screw bolted through the engine well walls, the front and rear of the transom was prepared (degreased and roughed up) for fibre glassing. The whole transom was glassed from the inside of the engine well to a point approximately 1 foot below the original transom line. I used a finer grade of glass matting as I progressed finishing with a very fine mat which gave it quite a decent finish. When all was dry I made a stainless steel plate out of 3/32 sheet and formed the exact shape over the transom and down to 2" below the lower engine bolts. The sheet was individually bolted throught the transom in 4 points and then the engine was then bolted through the whole lot giving a very stable platform. This modification was made 15 years ago and I have not experienced any stress or movement in the joint. If the link in my signature works you maybe able to see the original rubbing strips by the transom, this will give you an idea about how much I raised it.
Cheers mate.
Tyronutt

Re: Seafoam or Redex? What's better, or are they the same thing?

That's rather neat-I've bookmarked that for future reference. Thanks!

It's amazing how much different yours and mine are considering they are both the same basic hull. Mine's ready for action now, 1st time out at sea on her this weekend coming... Fingers crossed...

I did all the wiring and mounted the motor in the street outside my house over the bank holiday. Considering I've converted the pullstart to electric with alternator and electric choke, my powerhead is 84ish, the leg is '73 and the cowl is part '73 part '83 I was absolutely ecstatic that everything worked 1st time.Paint still leaves a lot to be desired though. I covered up the large areas of missing paint and the apalling canalboat twee waterlily pictures with the white you can see but a rubdown and full respray in 2-pack is on the cards for the winter, along with a new rubbing strake.

This is what she looks like now.
This is what she looks like now.
Microplus 500... 1st sea trial on Friday...

All the very best with the trials my friend. It's funny but your cockpit layout is an exact opposite to mine, your steerings on the left and your door opens the opposite way. I reckon she's ready rigged for the States. LOL. She's looking nice from the pictures. Do I remember you saying you sold the canopy, if so what are you going to use? As you can see by the pictures JILLY-AN-TU is looking a bit bland at the moment in her Diamond White livery but I will not rush it but sit back see how I can pretty her up a bit.
Cheers for now.
Tyronutt

You have the steering wheel on the wrong side. Other than that you did a great job.
