so I used seafoam on my outboard, used as directions said. ran the motor for 45 miutes after. now everytime I try to rev it it chokes out and stalls, even if I try to slowly increase the speed it starts coughing. never ran like this before and I know it has the symptoms of bad timing but it ran fine before the seafoam. any ideas. heres a video

Re: seafoam problem

First, what motor and how did you use the seafoam. Most probably broke a piece of junk loose in the carb and got caught in a jet. Normal outcome from not cleaning the carbs first.

motor is a 1985 evinrude 30 hp. I used the spray can and idled the engine high then prayed about a third the can in the carburator until the motor started to bog down. I shut it off and let it set for 15 minutes. everytime i try to give it throttle it bogs way down and sometimes stalls out. would junk be able to clog a jet using this method?

Re: seafoam problem

De-carbon treatment gets carbon out of the firing chambers, piston rings and exhaust. It sometimes requires several treatments to get things cleaned up.

De-carbon treatment often leaves the recirculation check valves fouled.

I know of no reason to think that SeaFoam will have any effect on the carburetors, good or bad.

Aerosol treatment sprayed into the carburetor would not go through the jets, so it could not very well clog them.

You might pull the plugs and check them, sometimes they kind of foul with large doses of sea foam. If you are reving it up by pushing down on the carb linkage, like in the film, it will stall and not run very well because you are not advancing the timing along with the amount of fuel.

you are moving the butterfly in carb, use your fast idle lever on remote control or unhook throttle cable and move throtte arm by hand. The white piece of plastic(cam follower) has to be advanced or will stall, the piece you are pushing down on (cam roller) has to sit against the cam follower.Do not over rev motor .

yeah I should have mentioned I did advance the throttle with the fast idle lever and have disconnected the throttle cable on the side and tried it like that. also put it in gear and tried to give it throttle. it just bogs down no matter what. I have changed the plugs since the treatment. its almost as if the seafoam loosened something up and its clogged somewhere. any chance the exhuast ports could be clogged?

Re: seafoam problem

Hi there, I had a similar problem this summer with my 82 johnson 20 hp.

I put an entire can of seafoam into my gas mixture which i realized was wrong so I diluted it. It got the max dose though.

After I ran it, it began to bog out, and it was also hard to keep it idling immediately after cold starting it (sitting over night for example).

I found that if I just slowly turned the throttle, it would get going, but if I punched it, it would bog out. Eventually, after running that whole tank of gas through it while fishing and toodling to beaches, the problem went away. By the time I filled a new tank of gas with no sea foam, the problem was gone.

This was on the lake though not in a barrell. Maybe just get to a lake and get the fuel flowing for a length fo time. Worked for me -- hope this somehow helps you.

Ryan.
