Re: Seafoam?

I did a seafoam treatment last night (66 merc 500) and man did it smoke! The set of directions I got was 3/4 gal gas, just shy of 3 oz oil, and a 16 oz can of seafoam. I used a regular gas can to do this, as I had 4 gal in my regular tank... So the directions I got from some where was to run it for 15 min, then let sit for 15 min. the second time i started it up the wife came out and asked if it was on fire. I repeated the process 4 times until it stopped smoking. Now it idles alot smoother. Going to water test it either tonight or tomorrow.

Hey Andy,

thats about a quarter of the smoke that I created with my little 6HP machine. :D

I think yours probably had a little less carbon build up than mine, which is a good sign.

Hows it run now?

Re: Seafoam?

yeap, that is exactly what it is suppose to do. thanks for the video, saved it for future reference.

you can run Seafoam in any motor. 4 strokes tend not to carbon up as much as there is no fuel oil mix. weedeaters, etc love it also.

It idles a LOT smoother, but I haven't been able to water test yet... going tomorrow for that. I'll report back...

I think that I am going to run it through all my cars and machines... hey, can't hurt right?

Re: Seafoam?

If you don't want to run SeaFoam in a four stroke, then try the Chevron Techrom fuel injector cleaner. It works great, I have used it for years now. Costco is probably the cheapest around for buying, 4 bottle for under 10 bucks.
My wife used to have a Mustang w/4 banger in it, once in a while she would put some cheap AM/PM /ARCO gas in it and here comes the check engine light and in went the Techron to clean things up.

Re: Seafoam?

We use seafoam in our tractors here, never thought of using it on the boat. I'll try it and report back.

Re: Seafoam?

Is there such a thing as leaving the Sea Foam / gas mix in an outboard for too long? What about spraying Deep Creep Sea Foam directly into the cylinders? How long is too long for it to sit?
Thanks,
John

Seafoam is also a fuel stabilizer so you can leave it in the fuel for quite some time.

Seafoam is also a fuel stabilizer so you can leave it in the fuel for quite some time.

I use Stabil but the principle is the same. Supposed to stabilize fuel for up to two years.

I bought my boat in 2001 with a 60 hp Merc 4 stroke. The salesman said that if I wasn't going to burn a tankful (19 gal) at least every 30-40 days, he recommended using stabilizer all the time. He said some of the fuel lines were pretty small and they had seen some problems with low usage. I run mostly on no wake lakes here in Iowa so it turned out I had trouble burning more than about a tank and a half a season.

I recently put the 2 year claim to the test.

In August 2008, I filled the tank for the annual Wisconsin trip where I ended up using less than a quarter tank. Work and weather kept me from getting out much the rest of the 2008 season and 2009 was a disaster, boating wise - just didn't get out much.

This spring I'm sitting there with about 7 or 8 gallons of 20 month old gas in my tank. I considered trying to drain it but decided if it would burn at all I'd go out on the one local go fast lake and burn it off. I finally retired April 30 so I had time but it took about a week for the thunderstorms and high winds to let up a little. The motor fired right up and after I got out of the no wake zone, I decided what the heck and put the hammer down. The 60 let out a mighty bellow, boat jumped on plane and it ran like I was burning brand new gas.

I just bought a ranger boat...and the previous owner (a good friend of mine) had a real hard time with this boat fouling plugs.

He mentioned that he has used the boat so little that it still had the original fuel in it(from 3.5 years ago)

I ran it yesterday with a crapl oad of Sea-Foam in it, never fouled plugs, and it ran like a top. Obviously not ideal fuel to be running, but there wasn't much left so i wanted to get most(if not all) of it out of there before i filled it up with new stuff. It wasn't worth pulling the fuel tank for that little bit of fuel left.

Re: Seafoam?

Sea-Foam has an A+ rating in my books. I use it in every type engine I have. I with Major Woods on that ! "Seafoam is one of those products that actually works as advertised."

Re: Seafoam?

Gotta agree with the Seafoam works sentiment.

Used a can of the spray on my '90 Force 50hp. Prior to treatment, it was hard to start, idled poorly, and speed at WOT topped out at 27mph.

After treatment, during which the neighborhood looked like there was a forest fire raging, the idle smoothed out, starting became a one-turn affair, and speed at WOT (same load in boat) increased to 31mph.

Darned good stuff!
