Can you spray/pour seafoam into a cold engine i.e. one that wont start to loosen up piston/rings/reeds/clogged passages ?

Re: Seafoam

Oh yeah! Seafoam..great stuff!! It ain't real cheap though. I have it in a spray can. From what I heard, it was originally formulated and used by the US Navy before it became available to the public.

Re: Seafoam

Ya know, Seafoam isnt that great of stuff...
You can make your own much cheaper than buying it in a can.
It consists of
40-60% pale oil (oil used for many things such as artists oil paints, cutting oils for machinists, 3in1 type oils.)
25-35% naptha (charcoal lighter fluid)
10-20% IPA (rubbing alcohol)

Yeah... real good stuff for your engine.

Re: Seafoam

hey! it works doesn't it?:D

I cant actually say that it does. Working in a dealership, I have done many many carb cleans after having been "winterized" with seafoam.
And it has NEVER cleaned out a dirty carb.

Re: Seafoam

you don't run seafoam in the carb to clean it silly:D

used for a decarbing additive(main use) and to KEEP an ALREADY CLEAN fuel system CLEAN.

most likely it was already dirty and seafoam set some stuff loose in the tank or lines or anywhere.

Re: Seafoam

The stuff has always scared me so I never used it until recently.

I got 2 old outboards, a '71 Evinrude 18 HP and a '69 Merc 7.5. The 18 hp was pretty funky and the seafoam really cleaned it up good. The 7.5 was probably not used much and fairly clean so it made little difference on it. I also used it on an old '64 Briggs and Stratton 2.5 hp edger motor I have and it worked wonders on that. That little motor always ran bad and leaked oil. It still leaks the oil, but runs a lot better and has a lot more power.

So I will use seafoam from now on.

But with all that said, it still scares me.

Pouring liquid into a running motor can buy you a lot of trouble. Liquid does not compress. The only way I'd ever introduce seafoam into the running motor is by spraying it in.

The other issue with it can be location. I live in the city and when I did the 18 hp Rude I though for sure the fire dept would show up. Lots and lots of smoke can come out of an outboard if the exhaust leg is full of junk. I mean a lot of smoke. LOL ;)

Re: Seafoam

only bad side effect from seafoam is loosening up dirt from an already dirty fuel system and then stuff starts to happen:eek:

just run the motor on the lake and you'll be fine.

i run my old merc at 24:1 and when i take off from the no wake or there is someone behind me it always smokes. nice blue cloud:p

Has anyone tried a seafoam home brew like the one in this post?
