Hello, I have a Montgomery Ward SeaKing I believe is a 40 hp. the Model# GG90264 Serial# 75X699955. It has two mixture adjustment knobs and electric start.Very clean under cover.

I would like to verify the Following info:

Year
Horsepower
proper fuel mixture
where I can find manuals

Now my problem:

I did start the motor and it idles fairly smooth but any slight adjustments to either of the knobs causes it to stall out. If it is throttled up in neutral or forward, it bucks and sputters like a bronco and smokes alot and tries to quit. I used gas that I use for a Johnson 9.9 (mid-late 70's) and I don't think it is the right mixture which is causing the smoke(the previous owner said he always ran it rich). Any recommendations for my malfunctions would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Re: seaking 40?hp assistance needed

Hi arff, welcome to iboats. Your motor is a 40 hp 1957 model and the proper fuel to oil mix is 24:1 with a TCW-3 oil. Manuals can be found on this website. Your motor was made by the Gale division of OMC for Montgomery Ward. Gale motors are very similar to comparable year Johnny/Rude motors. Find a manual that covers 1957 40hp Johnson or Evinrude motors. The two knobs are your low idle and high speed carb adjustment needle valves. These motors require fine tuning the knobs at different RPM. You may need to adjust the high speed knob to different settings at different RPM's to get the motor to run right. The needle valves are delicate and can be damaged if you seat them with too much force so be carefull. BTW, that Johnson 9.9 would have used 50:1 fuel, oil. That is way too lean for your Sea King. Hope this helps and good luck.

Hi arff
OMC did not produce a 40hp motor in the fifties. I believe the model # for your motor is GG9026A. This would make your motor a 1957 25hp. The fuel ratio is 24:1. Any after market manual covering 50's model Johnson/Evinrudes will work just fine. Operation, basic adjustments and maint for all OMC outboards of the era is about the same. I would suggest you aquire a manual, either purchess one or check one out at your public library. Then give the motor a going over (service). This will include inspecting the ignition system, cooling system, fuel system, lower unit, etc. This will also give you tips on proper operation. Once you know and understand how controls like the needle valves work, you will realize that once properly set you will rarely if ever have to mess with them. I know, guys ask me this question all the time. If you don't need to mess with those knobs all the time, why are they so big? The only answer I can come up with is, cause we did not have fish finders to play with when the fish weren't biting.
