Hey guys,

I have a Montgomery Ward Seaking Alternator 55hp that had trouble staying on, I was told it was a 77 so yea. I checked the comp. in both cylinders and found one to be giving only like 60psi, while the other was 130. I took off the head and found the gasket was burnt on both cylinders. So i got a new one, but i need the torqing specs for the head bolts. Anybody know?

Mod: VWB 52056
Ser: 47x 20257

Re: Seaking Torque specs needed!!

I don't have the exact book but the one I do have says to clean the old cement off the bolts, then apply Permatex #2 to the first 3/4" of threads. Then progress from center outward to 100-125 inch/lbs. Then again to 195-205 inch/lbs. Then again to 265-275 inch/lbs. After motor has been test run and allowd to cool, re-torque to 265-275 inch/lbs.

That applies to 1970. Yours is a 1974

Re: Seaking Torque specs needed!!

The important thing when torqueing anything is to do it gradually in a logical pattern.usually center out alternating or circular pattern. My aftermarket book published in 89 says torque from center outward to 75 in/ lbs.
then in 50 in lb increments until 270 in lb is reached. retorque to 270 in lbs after run and cooled. This is not necessarily better just different.

Re: Seaking Torque specs needed!!

I would believe the 270 inch pounds torque. My 25 hp manual has the head torque at 225 inch pounds and the torques drop as the engines hp drops. (130 inch pounds on a 3.5):)

For comparison, a 40hp Johnson/Evinrude is only 168-192 inch pounds.
