Seal in shift shaft bushing - Classic 50.

I am back for more advice. I am trying to replace the seals and impeller on the lower unit of the Mercurys Classic 50. All going well so far except the seal in the shift shaft bushing. Nowhere to get purchase to push it out. I have been pulling it out with 90 degree probes, small scree drivers, needle nose pliers and have only been successful in tearing it up. Any suggestions? Can I burn it out?
