Just finished the deck replacement & remembered the bunks need replacement as well:facepalm:. Their 5'ers, I'm going to pick up the treated 2x4's from Lowes & was wondering if I needed to seal the wood with something before covering with the carpet. I would think not as it should last for awhile as is & if I get a few years out of them that's fine, I'll just re-do it when they go bad again. Should I seal them? If so, with what? Tanx, Maxx

Treated lumber is -- well -- already treated for moisture. Nothing else needed.

If you seal them moisture will not be able to get out of the wood... they wont breathe. Treated is ok if you have fiberglass hull... aluminum would corrode with the treated. Or so im told. What is 5ers? The board width? A 2x6 will be 5.5 wide. 2x4 will be 3.5. Goodluck!

2 Years ago, when I redid mine I used regular 2x6 lumber, its held up very well so far. I only covered the top and sides leaving the bollom open to airdry, here in AZ things dry FAST! I wouldn't put any thing on them especially if I had used pressure treated already. Just make sure they can dry, you dont want them encased in carpet!

5'ers = 5 footers, meaning 5 foot long bunk boards. Thanks for the advice, I really didn't think the PT lumber would need anything else, but wanted to make sure, never did this before, 2nd year boater ya know.
