Seal!

My neighbour called this morning saying he couldn't get his taxi out for work. Parked underneath was this seal!
The Ministry of Fisheries sent a couple of guys from the North Shore and they captured it in the net. It wasn't plain sailing at all. It was bigger than they thought, one of them said that when they get a call to a seal and it's described as 3' long then they expect it to be about 2' long. Not 5' as in this case.
Interesting enough this one showed a tag specifing it was a West Coast seal. Yet the only access here is via the East Coast. Lately there's been a lot of Orca in the Waitemata harbour and the seals have been pushed up further into the esturies than normal.
I reckon Arthur (neighbour) has a great story to tell his taxi mates!
Ross

I usually choose a simple block of wood to block my wheels and it's allot safer when I toss it into the back of the truck!!! :D

Bob

Re: Seal!

leaky seal... funny!
when I used to fish for Cod out of LA, these
buggers would regularly steal a few. they were
smart enough not to eat the hook, so all you
would pull up was a head.

Re: Seal!

Hi Capt. Bob,
yes these fellows do bite. One of the Ministry of Fishery blokes claimed that if you'd been bitten the bites wouldn't heal. It'd leave a nasty wound that would heal only around the wound and leave a deformity. He told us of dogs dying after being bitten by these things. His claim was that when the scientists come up with an antibiotic strong enough to fight the bacteria these animals have in their mouth then they'll be rich buggars!
I saw the mouth from about 1' when it was secure and I wouldn't like to inspect any closer. This thing could move almost as fast as we did. In the wild obviously no problem but put them in a mans world and they are as scared as anything.
Ross
