Re: Sealing lower unit
DPSchmidt,I assume that you have indication of water in lower unit.It is possible in some cases to extract the seals without pulling carrier ,however close attention to not damaging propshaft where seal rides is necessary. To change the propshaft seals and "O"rings you are correct in removing the carrier assembly.
There are a few other possible sources for water intrusion to include:driveshaft seal under waterpump, shiftrod seal and cover gasket, and fill/vent plug washers. An air pressure test will aid in locating the possible sources for lower unit leaks. If you made your determination to change propshaft seals based on the fact that L.U.oil is accumulated around propshaft seal area, then it is likely leaking there. It is a good practice to change fill and vent plug washers each time they are removed for servicing as they are inexpensive to obtain and new ones provide good insurance against leakage.
