Sealing oil dipstick tube @ pan?

My dipstick tube is leaking where it enters the pan. It appears "Bubba" attempted a fix with Permatex. How do you repair this correctly?<br /><br />Also, how do I determine what size oil pan I have? Motor (Mercruiser 454/330) appears stock and Mercruiser manual indicates 6 quarts, however "Bubba" sez 8 quarts.<br /><br />The dipstick appears to be cut-down and previous owner says "Full" is 3" up the stick. Sounds like too much oil to me.<br /><br />Thanks in advance,<br /><br />D. Ocean<br />Pompano Beach, FLA

Danny, the dipstick tube is a press fit, a bit of permatex and a good interference fit is all it needs but, why has the dipstick been cut down? Is the tube loose in the hole? With the original sump the oil level shouldn't be riding up the tube. Sorry I cant be more help. Whats 'bubba'? Aldo

Not sure why dipstick has been cut. Yes, the tube is loose.<br /><br />"Bubba" is a mythical person (first heard of him on the other forum I peruse www.corvetteforum.com). "Bubba" is the guy who used to own your car/boat/house. You never meet "Bubba", but you see the results of his work and spend your hard-earned dollars fixing his mistakes...e.g.: electrical tape and twisted wires instead of crimp or solder joints...a beer can & fiberglas resin used to patch a hole in a battery box...a wire hanger for clips on your throttle linkage.<br /><br />Yep...Bubba is everywhere.

Danny bubba was right 454 8 quarts permatex was a fairly smart choice for leaking tube bubba was right again, Although bubba should try some Right Stuff sealer any aoutomotive store has it thats the name RIGHT STUFF. You may have the wrong manuel. If you want torepair it correctly buy a new oil pan and dip stick tube have it installed, Bubbas idea want look to bad when you get that bill.

you could try pulling the tube out, and expanding the end a tad. remove and place near end in a soft jaw vise or put a rag around it. use a tapered punch and hammer to expand the end slightly. reinstall with a small amount of permatex...
