Sealing the cap..,

my bowrider takes on water from under the rubrail where the cap and hull meet. I've got everything out of it right now for to repaint the interior and engine compartment and do some engine mods.

I'm wondering how it would work to seal it from the inside. I would still seal the outside when I have time to take the rubrail off alltogether and really do it right as I put it back on. Note that I'm not really worried if the cap would ever come off again without a sawzall... (I don't plan on redoing this boat again... ever.

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Re: Sealing the cap..,

My maxum was sealed from the outside with some sort of clear rubber sealer which held very well. Silocone I guess!
I plan on resealing mine from the inside as well as the outside (with what I'm not sure yet, still need to do some research) just to take advantage of any added support it will give the gunwales I'm building on my boat and help stop any movement that might occur between the fiberglass gunwale and hull sides although any rivets and screws should take care of that when it is all secured back together.

max!

Re: Sealing the cap..,

I actually think that I have some rivets that go all the way through...

I was thinking 5300... but there's almost a well around the inside.. it's gonna take a party pack or two of the big tubes to do it right... and to get up in there is going to make a hell of a black mess everywhere... especially up front under the bow

I'll quit whining... I've got at least 3 or 4 tubes out in the garage. I was wishfully thinking someone would give me some really simple answer. :D

I don;t want to put anything on the outside as I think it'll show pretty bad. the boat is black...

Thanks!

ps. It's not an issue up in the river where it's fairly protected, but once out in the sound where the water is usually a lot rougher a fair amount starts to come in under there...

That is a simple answer. What is 5300? 4200 and 5200 are white.

5200 is available in black, but it isn't stocked anywhere. I ordered some recently.

Re: Sealing the cap..,

sorry... 5200... in black... black boat so I buy it when it is in stock, etc... Boaters world here used to carry it, but they just closed the doors for good last week. I think overtons carrys it, but haven't been in there lately. I get into trouble there if I'm not careful... all the pretty skiis and wakeboards... I suppose I can see why women need many pairs of shoes... or at least identify

The 5200 was gone from boaters world shelves long before the end so I didn't get any for a really low price, but I did wind up buying 10 - 15 gallons of selected easypoxy, interlux and seacoat paints and primers for under under $100... (good two part epoxy or urethane primers and paint) gallons of and a bunch of mas epoxy, baloons, etc, etc...

Why would you be afraid to put it on the outsiide? The rubrail hides it anyway.

Re: Sealing the cap..,

Usually people use silicone.

But I'm using 5200 cause I want it as solid as possible and I don't really feel like glassing the cap to the hull.

It takes like a week though for regular 5200 to cure though maybe some fast cure would be better if you don't already have it.

I found 3M white 5200 at Home Depot

I bought my first tube at West Marine for like $13 - $15 with tax

Saw the SAME package of the SAME stuff at Home Depot for $7

Go figure

Yeah, West Marine makes my wallet hurt. I just laugh at the prices...dont buy. I use the store to see in real life what I intend to buy over the net.
