searching for carb rebuild kit

I am searching for a carburetor rebuild kit for the mercruiser 4.3 on my 1987 Dixie hustler 188. I see quite a few options on this site listed for the 4.3. I called a local marina and all he could say is "less than 100$" but that he would need to see the Carb. The prices I see on here seem much better than 100$, though his are genuine mercury parts.

Is there a site where I can use some serial numbers off my motor to determine exactly what I need? I have an alpha one outdrive if that matters.

I also guess I'll get a distributor cap and rotor button and plugs while I'm at it.

The carb should have numbers on it someplace,or a tag. If not, take it off and clean it up a bit, empty the fuel and bring it in. Should not be to hard to figure out. Also bring the motor numbers and year, all the info you get.

Google "Mercruiser Parts" and then double click on the posting that says Boats.com. That's IBoats' parts.

You've either got a Mercury 2 barrel, Rochester 2 barrel or a 4 barrel carb. Double click on the correct model and click on carb. section.

Got to the bottom of the list, and a carb kit will be listed.

Boat carb's of that vintage are ridiculously simple. Little pollution control issues to address. It's very easy to rebuild the carbs, and even easier if you have a repair manual.

Re: searching for carb rebuild kit

I'd really like to figure it out myself without taking it in and do it myself. The parts on this site are half what he was talking about. I looked through the ones listed here on I boats. I'll check it out and see which carb I have.

Been browsing the ********** site. When I get to the 1987 4.3 motor section there are three long number choices. Are these serial numbers I will find somewhere on my motor?

Re: searching for carb rebuild kit

Post the following info and we can give you the number of the carb kit you need.

1. Engine serial number (should be in the first post every time you start a new thread) (will be in the format '0Bxxxxxx')
2. Carb make (will be Mercarb, Rochester or Weber)
3. Number of carb barrels. (2 or 4)
4. If you can see a number on the carb, post that too. (will be in the format 33xx-xxxx)

Chris....

These are the locations of the engine serial number. The plate (bottom picture) is above the starter motor.

Re: searching for carb rebuild kit

Thanks guys. As soon as I get a chance I will uncover my boat and find the serial numbers needed. I'm trying to get all this stuff squared away while I have time to take my time. I have a habit of putting things off and I don't wanna be rushing in the spring.

Sorta unrelated, if I have a 2 barrel, would a 4 barrel yield better performance?

Yep, 20 horsepower at the top end... But you'd need a new manifold too.

Flame arrestor is also gummed up. Any need to get another one? Or just go at this one with a brush and a little gasoline?

Ayuh,... Clean it with solvent, 'n blow it out with compressed air...

If it's a Rochester Quadrajet you will find the number on the port side stamped vertically with the first # at the bottom and the last # at the top. Below that is a 4 digit code that indicates build month and year using julian dating.
Don't buy the rebuild stuff til you read up on the service you will do. There are some choices to make. Also I would get my parts from Cliff's High Performance or The Carburetor Shop in Missouri. Both have web sites. Either one will get you the right stuff. I bought the Mercruiser kit and didn't use it because it left out a lot of parts that I ended up using.
Cliff Ruggles book on the Quadrajet is awesome. He hosts a discussion forum too. I just did mine this fall using his guidance. He goes into the why and the how of it. It's very interesting and between his book and the Mercruiser manual my redo appears to have come out nicely. Of course I won't be sure til the spring, but I am feeling confident.

Take a lot of pics of the linkage, it will help a ton.
