I have a 1988 Sears Gamefisher 3 hp motor that runs great but runs backwards. This is a centrifugal clutch drive motor with no reverse only forward - what the heck is going on here ????

I've had a 3HP Gamefisher for 25+ years and mine only runs forward. Maybe your motor is running backwards?...Prop is on backwards???? If you figure this out please let us know! Good Luck!

Ya - I read a post one time the guy motor ran in reverse, I wonder how that can be - the prop only goes on one way because of the shear pin I think - very strange

The engine is either running backwards which is not a problem for two stroke engines using reed valves or has a wrong prop. My dad had a small outboard that i cant remember what brand it was but when idling very low in the water it would kick over to running backwards I believe this can be a timing issue also. If this is a motor you just got someone may have put a Left hand prop on it when it needed a right hand or vise versa.

It is quite possible that the engine is running backwards if you are starting it backwards. We Kart racers used to reverse the direction of West Bend and Tecumseh single cylinder engines for dual engine rigs.

In some engines it is as simple as setting the timing about 90* out.

How are you starting it??

Well, first I will have to check the prop, that was replaced from another 3hp Gamefisher. I never knew there where different props for these but maybe so. I do not have the motor right now. Once I get it I will look at the direction and prop closely. As far as starting it has a build in recoil, pull and go (in reverse) at least this is what the customer told me, I have not seen it do this myself.

Theres no counter rotation prop for a tanaka, I really doubt that its running backward.
The last time I saw a outboard run backward was when atom chips were used on a twin cylinder engine with electric start and a alternator charging system, the engine rotation would change directions when shifting gears. This is why Atoms were not made for engines with charging systems.

My mistake, my J/E mech buddy tells me your engine actually could be changing direction if your timing is set to close to TDC

+1 on the low idle direction change.
Had a moped once when I was a teen. Pulled up the driveway, it almost stalled, so I gave it the gas. Dumped me on my *** when it took off backward. 2 wheeled vehicles are hard to steer in reverse.

I have a 3 HP Sears Gamefisher. It is a trolling motor.

My thoughts are since you may not have seen the engine......is it mounted on the BOW of a boat maybe? and with the steering handle turned inboard.....it would appear to be running in reverse? :) :)

Many props can be fitted to this engine with spacers etc. The original prop is a 3 blade (power) prop with RH turn. Engine runs clockwise.

One of the problems with these engines is the pull starting. The engine will tilt on you when you pull the starter rope. This makes a "soft" engine start pull. Use a (temporary) pin on the transom tilt mount to prevent this tilt when starting. It will give a firm fast pull which reduces the chance of backfire starting in the wrong direction from a soft start. -Larry

that could quicky cause problems...wrong pitch wrong RPM=dead motor, should I not run my 20yr old Tanaka weed eater wide open?

They are a trolling motor for low to mid speed
That blows the never lug a 2 cycle theory all to heck

Heh-heh...... The weedeater has a light load and is designed for high RPM heat disipation by both cooling fins and fuel/oil ratio and the motor displacement/cumbustion temperatures etc.

Low RPM with 2 cycle engines is a relative measure. In the case of gamefisher 3 HP's you don't even get centrifigul clutch operation until you exceed apprx. 600 RPM. Hardly a "stall" mode of operation. :)

Low intellegence is a relative measure for some, Low rpm will shorten the life of a 2 cycle outboard with fixed exhaust ports meant to be run in its powerband, this is why the use of exhaust valves in some 2 cycle applications to give them more power at low rpms, hehheh

OK, you have given the trolling motor people a choice. Wide open 'till it siezes, or moderation in using a (too small) motor to try and plane under their load conditions. I try to help here.
