I just recently purchased a 14ft john boat with a 1980 7.5 gamefisher motor on it and was told that it just needed a spark plug. well i seen that it wasn't getting spark with a new one so i pulled the flywheel and looked at the points. they didnt look clean so i just went ahead and purchase a new coil and contact set and condenser. i just got done installing it and i set the point gaps to .020 and i still have no spark??? please help I really want to get on the lake tomorrow

Give me some pics. Trust me I have a 7.5 clinton that has a Beotch of an ignition system. If I cant help you, you need to go to Yahoo forums and sign up for the Eska group. Ed Stoller on there is an ignition god.

Take a screwdriver or nail or something metal. It should stick to the two little magnets on the inside of the flywheel.

Did you hold the plug up to the block or frame and spin the flywheel and still have no spark? Make sure the part of the motor that you hold the plug up to is unpainted.

Okay so all of your grounds are tight? Did you clean up where the armature meets the flywheel magnets? A little fine grit sandpaper works well if have some rust on it, or the magnets. You are sure that your points are set per spec? When the crank spins at one point they should touch. Give it a whirl. Check and make sure all the old wires that you didnt change are still in contact with their connectors.

Oh and if you cant spin the motor to see the points touch without the flywheel on, put it in gear and spin the prop.

Okay cool. I have a feeling that your points are gapped too far, at least by the look of it. It is supposed to be .02 at the WIDEST part(can you see where the lobe on the crankshaft is the biggest) They should be touching when the lobe is the smallest.
