Sears 9 Hp Fuel

I have a 1967 sears 9 hp that burns the gas hand pumped into the carb but then quits running. What would cause this?:

Im assuming the engine has a separate fuel tank? I would start by checking the fuel pump, sounds like you might have a bad diaphram.
