Sears/Elgin coil question

I have a 1962 Sears/Elgin air cooled outboard. Used to run great but it sat for a few years and no longer has spark. Would like to replace the coil but they're expensive and old stock (which may also be dead). I've noticed that you can buy a Tecumseh coils (various) with the attached ignition wire new for fairly cheap. Anyone have experience with this kind of transplant?

Did you OHM test the coil to see if it was bad? Did you clean the points and re-set or replace?

I did 'dress' the points and re-set them. Haven't been able to test the coil since my ohm meter crapped out. I have to pick up a new one.
I did take a shot at the Tecumseh coil for about 15 bucks. Fits on the field and the attached ignition wire fits BUT the two wires coming out of the back of the coil have a hard plastic covering (for about a quarter inch) and can't be bent and they unfortunately match up with contacting the field. In other words; they're in the way. If the two wires had been attached to the coil about a half inch higher it may have been a go. This is fyi for anyone else thinking of doing a coil transplant. Just not going to work.

Update: I picked up a new old stock original coil for (at a reasonable price) the motor. I got lucky and the spark is back. Apparently the coil was the problem; an easy fix.
