hi i bought a sears gamefisher 7.5 hp ob motor. it did not run until i did a carb rebuild and now it runs great, starts first pull. the guy stored it outside for "a couple of years" in a covered carport. anyways when i try to shift into gear it often slips out at lower throttle but stays in better at higher throttle and at WOT it almost never slips out. the motor says positive shift drive on the side i dont know if that helps

There's little plate on the port side of the leg, about halfway down, that is retained by two screws. Snatch that plate off, and under it, you will see a screw head pointed right at you. That screw connects the upper and lower halves of the shift linkage rod. Get the motor in neutral, (prop spins freely), loosen that screw, and put the shift control lever in the neutral position. Tighten that screw, and see if it goes fully into gear. You are actually adjusting the length of the linkage rod. If you are falling out of gear at low speed, forward is not fully engaged. It doesn't do it at high speed because the torque the gears are carrying prevent them from moving. This suggests that the rod needs to be a little longer. If that's the only problem you got, you are in high cotton, my friend.

Re: sears gamefisher 7.5 217 586752 gears slipping

i have the exact same motor. a sears gamefisher 7.5 model # 217 586752. the motor runs pretty well but it shuts off at low throttle and i can never get it running for long. i can hear that it is kind of starving for gas. sounds like i need to clean the carb or put a rebuild kit in it. i have a couple of questions. first of all, does the carb rebuild kit have good instructions to replace all the parts because i'm not a master mechanic but i do know the basics about these motors? also when i took it apart the paint was literally chipping off everywhere, is this common? and would it effect how the motor functions? i am pretty certain it is just doing this because of it's age. and my last question is when i took the bowl off the carburetor the inlet needle just fell out. how is the inlet needle and its seat supposed to be fit into the motor. because if this wasn't in the correct position it would definitely be the source of my problem. any help would be appreciated. thanks, ryan
