I've been searching ebay for an owners manual for model number 217-586753. The closest I can find is a 754. Does anyone know if there is a significant difference between the two models?

You really don't need a owners manual if your just wanting a parts list and diagrams, I use sears model lookup and there's not a nickels worth of dif on those models you mentioned.
I take my part numbers from sears and call www.certifiedpartscorp.com 1- 800-356-0777, tell Dianne you head about them at this forum. CPC is the owner of the intellectual rights to the manuals and they own whats left of Tecumseh and they produce and own the genuine Eska/gamefisher parts manufacturing rights....not knock offs like you find on ebay.

are genuine authorized parts distributors for CPC and they don't sell knockoff,s or junk either...be carefull several sellers on ebay are knock off artist...lots of junk gaskets and bad service with poor attitudes and no customer support.
