Sears Gamefishier 3hp drive shaft won't turn

This motor sat in salt water overnight and I found it the next day. I washed the head and cqrb out and got used it several times as a trolling motor before letting it set for 6 months.

Now the motor runs but the prop doesn't turn. I got the parts diagram off Sears but it doesn't say anything about where to put oil in the gear case. Maybe if I put some transmission fluid in it it might work loose. If not, what can I do about it? I've never had the lower unit off this one.

have you checked the shear pin on the prop?

Please post the model number of your outboard. Without that, we don't know which manufacturer made it, and that's critical if we are to help you. There were three manufacturers of Gamefisher outboards for Sears, and there's nothing similar between them.

I got it going again by inserting a screwdriver in the shear pin hole and moving it back and forth until it loosened up. It felt like it was grabbing up by the head.

Do you know what oil or fluid to put in the gearcase and how much? Thanks.

OK. Your outboard was made by Tananka to be sold by Sears. If you go to www.searspartsdirect.com and put your model number in, it will take you to exploded parts diagrams and parts lists. Most parts for that outboard are available at that web site.

I think you can still get the owner's manual there, too, and that will have the information on the lower unit oil.

These outboards are basically a weed whacker with a prop. They even have the centrifugal clutch like the weed whackers. By looking at the parts diagrams, you should be able to figure out where your problem is. The clutches often fail, and the bushings for the drive shaft in the housing also are a problem.
