Hello,

I have been given a boat and motor from my wife's grandfather, who
wanted to pass it along before he dies...
It is a 1965 Sears aluminum boat (13'6" long) - with a Sears branded
12Hp motor.
Motor Model# 571-59271
Motor Serial# 59271-C1513

The engine is in pristine condition, as it has only been run about 3 times since 1965 - and has sat in his yard since then - never run since the mid 1970's. I am sure that with a spark-plug change and maybe new fuel lines, that it will be good as new (barring any probs with the lower unit or fuel pump).

This seems to be the number one annying question as far as manuals... But I have checked the sears.com online parts catalog, and my boat is older than what they still list parts for.

Do you happen know where I can go for a reproduced manual for this engine? That would
tell any specifics on routine maintenance, the not-so-routine maintenance, fuel mixtures, etc.? And maybe who the actual motor manufactureer is/was - so I would know whether the "Old Outboard Shop & Service Manual" would cover this engine.

Thanks in advance,
Rex Smith
Richardson, Texas

Re: Sears manual

I'm not familiar with who built the motors for Sears in that era, but before you try to fire it up drop the carb bowl and see if there's any crud in there. Evaporated gas leaves nasty stuff behind, and you don't want the fresh gas you add picking it up. Change the lower unit lube, and probably the impeller (once you determine what you have, of course) Someone here will know, they just have to read your post. I'll keep my eyes peeled as well.

Re: Sears manual

Thanks for the advise, and I'll give Bob a call this week to see what he can offer as far as Manuals.

I'm not planning on cranking it up until I've looked at a manual and have done at least some re-lubing - so thanks for the pointer.

I've only been checking out the forums for a few days, now - and it looks like a good solid base of down-to-earth people here - I like it here... I might just pull up a chair and stay a while.

Rex

Re: Sears manual

Well, I had only checked their online parts catalog, and have not called a store to speak with a human. I'll do that in the morning, and will see what I can get from them as far as information.
Thanks,
Rex

Re: Sears manual

Okie dokie, - Well, I spoke with a human at Sears this morning, and they confirmed that they had no information on boats that old.

They were, however, able to refer me to a company that has parts, though. The company is "Discount Marine" (248-588-2625). Right off the bat, the gentleman at Discount Marine told me that that model of engine was manufactured by "West Bend" in the 1959-1963 timeframe, and he had no manuals, however that many city libraries might have the service manuals available on microfilm.

We'll see. Looks like I've got a bit of research to do, now. haha

Rex

Re: Sears manual

The Library did not have the manual on microfiche (that I could find) - however, they do have a couple of copies of the "Old Outboard Motor Service Manual" - which I think will do the job for my motor.

I'll need to buy a copy, so I can turn this one back in :D

Rex

Hi Rex,

Did you click on the Link for manuals at the top of this page? Also, I happen to see one of my local shops was selling the old manuals for 1/2 off. I could check it out if u want. Get the address and all that stuff. Hope this helps..
Good Luck.
Bill

Re: Sears manual

I've already called my local "Half-priced books" store, and they claim to have a copy - so I'll run by and see if it's the real deal tomorrow. They have it for under $10 - which is fine with me! Hope it's there tomorrow when I stop by.

Rex
