Hi guys! I am new to this site and have recently aquired a free 14' aluminum boat with an older sears OB.It runs, starts on the 2nd or 3rd pull but seems to vibrate a lot.It is an eska.I searched through several forum posts here and did get a lot of info but I am still trying to find the exact year model to know the correct fuel/oil mix.The rumbers are as follows:

Near the transom mount:152421

Further down towards the lower unit:26069

Small tag by the carburator: ?-643-15A
same tag 8504370 or 6504370

any info would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

Re: Sears outboard questions

Eska number would begin with 217 most followed by 58 or 59 plus 3 or more digits. These do vibrate almost to the point of discomfort.Generally noisy, somewhat under powered not very reliable. In my opinion get her running good with minumul investment and sell it and put the money toward a 5,5.5,6,7.5 or 8 hp Evinrude or Johnson from the 50s to the 80s.
Smoother, quieter, faster with a plentiful readily available parts supply.

Re: Sears outboard questions

lubrication on motors to 69 is 16:1,70-73 is 24:1,74 up 32:1 Quality outboard oil is specifically recommended.
I believe the 5hp uses conventional breaker points at least to 1970.My after market manual is not clear when change to solidstate on the 5 happened.
Motor uses an air cooled Tecumseh Power head. If a unit block it is an AV600.Av600 appeared on the 5 in 69.Sears started using Eska in 69. 5hp is
model 217 58520,Future numbers are all over the place no apparent ryme or reason related to the year.Though I'm no expert.

Re: Sears outboard questions

The Eska motors do run rough, or vibrate, but aren't too bad if used within their intended purpose. I would not choose one if I had to travel distance, their good small lake or pond motors. They don't have the speed or reliability for long distance runs.
I have several 5 and 7.5hp versions myself.
Parts can be scarce and there are several versions of the lower units and drives.
The one benefit to these was that they didn't require you maintain a water pump impeller on the smaller units, but some larger units do use an impeller to cool the lower unit and exhaust chamber or mid section. Some later models had ignition problems but mostly just do to a total lack of replacement parts these days.

Re: Sears outboard questions

Thanks guys.If the #'s arent a '69 model then I am going to assume its a 70-73 and go with 24:1.If I am wrong I figure it will just foul the plug and not kill the motor.
I live in Southern CA and plan to fish bays, harbors and local saltwater action.I am an avid kayak fisherman and want to basically fish the same areas as well as run hoop nets for lobster.I am already shopping for a newer model OB.

Re: Sears outboard questions

Keep in mind this motor uses a water cooled exhaust leg water should mist out the relief holes in the leg.It won't take kindly to salt water careful flushing
and maintenance is in order.

The plate on the top of the transome mount should give you the model number. I can see the plate in picture 3, but can't read it.

Sushiboy,,, as in 976-Tuna.com Sushiboy?

If so, What's up dude :D I haven't been on that site in a while as I'm working on a boat..... Found a new home

As far as the Sears/Eska, yeah what the other guys have said. I had a early 70's 7.5 HP and after a 15 minute run your couldn't feel you hand anymore, completely numb,,, lots of vibration.

Oh yeah, welcome aboard!

MODEL # 152421 on transom bracket

FISHRDAN WHATS UP!!!
A friend gave me this boat and I am allready planning on getting a new OB,I dont trust taking this outside the harbor, allthough it has good compression and starts easily.I ran it with the lower unit submerged in the trash can and it ran great.I wanted to take the boat out this weekend but rain makes for a bad seatrial in a riveted boat.
I am still confused on fuel/oil mix allthough 24:1 smokes a lot it seemed safer since reports varied from 16:1 to 32:1

My OB choices are as follows

New merc 4 stroke 5hp-$1368 at BPS
suzuki 6hp 4 stroke $1299 Allison marine

Used 2002 9.9 merc $1000 obo
used 2000 suzuki 8hp $650
2002 6 hp evinrude $600
Many more used out there

I like the Idea of new with the warranty and all but will probably go with a used motor just a newer model.Anything that runs well is better than what I have, the thing doesnt even have a neutral!

Thanks for all your help guys.

Re: Sears outboard questions

Good to see a familiar name, small world 'eh.

What HP is the hull rated for, does it say? I'd get the most HP you can afford, the 9.9 Merc looks interesting,,, if not something bigger. How heavy are you going to load the boat, that will make a big difference in how much HP you need. I think you will be disappointed on the performance of a 5HP on a 14' tinny. I ran a 5HP Merc for several years and it was good for me and my gear, but wouldn't run well with another onboard.

Not sure on the oil ratio, think my old 7.5 Eska was 32:1, but it still smoked like a chimney. Your old Eska might make a nice kicker though...

Are you going to be using it strictly for saltwater or going into freshwater also? Just wondering as Kalifornia has all those 2 stroke bans on lakes.

(BTW, you might have to post a new thread for opinions on a good outboard for your 14'er, lots of guy's won't even look at a thread titled "Sears outboard" LOL)
