I am looking at a Sears Ted Williams 7 hp outboard motor (eska). model # 217 59440. Is this a air cooled engine or water cooled. I ask because the parts list from sears lists an impeller and a water tube. Starts on the first crank but I do not see any water flow. What is a good price for it?

The engine itself is air cooled (note the fins on the powerhead). The water pump is for cooling the leg which carries the exhaust gasses from the engine, which will get flaming hot if not cooled. Actually, the engine itself is a Tecumseh 2 stroke.

I'm not great for prices since I'm likely not in your market though you don't mention yours. I would expect at the very low end of the scale though, since it's very loud and parts & service are a real problem. Would anyone disagree that $150 would be out of line for a runner?

I understand it does have a significant advantage in that it's very lightweight though.

You should get a mist out of the exhaust idle relief ports on the leg. Also, if it's not working the leg will get very hot very fast.

PS - It seems that all the Eska's have come out of the woodwork this weekend! There's three or four posts below yours about different ones..

There is a large hole at the bottom that seems to be the main exhaust port and another hole a foot above it (round and a little larger than a pencil). Is that the port a mist should come out of? I have never owned an out board motor and there is not much information about this motor.

What would you think is a good price for this motor. I looked at it yesterday and it starts well. small leak in the bowl under the carb. The seller is asking $150. What do you think?

You'd probably do better spending more, and hold out for a Johnsonrude.even a bit older.Look for a two cylinder motor, fully water cooled.

BUT years ago my Dad wanted to cut wood to heat his shop.He got a McCullough Mini-Mac.I said OK,just cut 20 to 25 minutes in the AM,and the same in the PM.He got almost 3 years out of it.

So $150 is a good price for the outboard, but realize it's a poor design, and heat will take it victim.Quickly.

DHP

Should I use oil designed for water cooled (oils with a w in the type) or oil for a weed eater or chain saw? I do not see alot of mist or spray comming out of the top port but the lower unit feels cool. I am tring to figure out if the impeller is working. Any sugestions? How much trouble will it be to replace the impeller?
