my sears 9.9 has a gas problem it will run great as long as the gas tank is above the motor but not when tank is in bottom of boat why?????????????

It has a compression-operated fuel pump.<br />It could be low compression or a failing fuel pump. I suspect the fuel pump,because they don't last long on today's fuels (alcohol eats the diaphrams outta them).<br /><br /><br />------------------<br />Water,water everwhere...And all I can catch is CATFISH!!!

My dad's GF 9.9 suffered from crappy fuel connections. You may be sucking air in through one of the connections. While your description is not the classic presentation, I know that his needed tightnening on most of the zip strips inside and outside the cowling. <br /><br />When you pump the bulb hard, do you get any fuel leakage? If so, check your connections.<br /><br />On the tank fittings, I put hose clamps instead of the crimp connectors they used..

Which brings me to axe this question.....<br />Why do they use zip strips as o-pposed to stainless hose clamps?<br /><br /><br />------------------<br />Water,water everwhere...And all I can catch is CATFISH!!!

My guess is that hose clamps cost too much but some have said that hose clamps can cut/damage the hose creating fuel/air leaks. But every time I've been stranded on the water the plastic gets replaced with stainless.

The zip strips suck.<br /><br />Even on this motor, which is cheap by outboard standards, but is not cheap, couldn't they splurge on a couple of $.20 connectors?

Just a wild guess, but tank may be subject to more than usual vibration with that particular tank-engine-boat combo an aerateing the fuel, causeing the fuel pump to work a lot harder
