I was wondering if any of you knew what material is best for covering boat seats? I am aware of the typical vinyl coverings, but I was wondering if other materials can be used.

-Gord :)

Re: Seat cover material

Gord, I would like to build a new seat for my boat and am probably going with vinyl for the outside. But what about the inside? Do you have any suggestions? I am afraid PE foam wouldn't do well.

Lou

I have a friend who used sunbrella fabric and it worked fine. You can buy it directly on the web or try e-bay.

The toughest part is finding an industrial sewing machine for any of the fabric or vinyl work.

Bob

Borrowed my sisters newer(mostly plastic) machine and trashed in about 10 minutes Then found an old cast iron machine and it went through the vinyl great. Just check goodwill stores for an old heavy duty machine

I have an old Singer from the 70's so I'm off the hook with sewing :) My former roommate brought it home one day, it was broken. I fixed it and it'll sew anything! My torn canvas was a piece of cake.

I'm still wondering what filling I should use for the seat, though. Any ideas, guys?

Thanks
Lou

Re: Seat cover material

If anyone needs some Vinyl I can get you some for free, as long as you'll pay the shipping...

I am fortunate enough to work for a Furniture Manufacturing company. We have a lot of left-over Vinyl that we eventually end up giving away to our employees. Let me know what color you would like and I'll see if we have some that is ready to be given away...
It's all good quality, Heavy duty grade uph. Vinyl. Waterproof of course....

Re: Seat cover material

Kclost,
What a generous offer.
I am currently preparing to cover my rear seat and cover some side panels in my Silverline. It will be red and white. I estimate that I will need 1-2 yards of red and 1-2 yards of white. I am assuming that it comes standard 54" wide.
I would be happy to pay for the material and shipping if you think it would be the right material for my seat. The colors are pure white and standard red. Let me know what I need to do. Twin_Screws@bellsouth.net

Thank you,
