I have a 9.9 johnson boat motor - it has remote controls and steering - so its not that easy to remove from the boat to keep at home.

Are there any good systems or locks I can use to keep the motor from getting stolen.

We keep the boat in a secured area, but theft can still happen.

I realize that it can be a little time consuming to remove BUT no anti theft device will stop anyone that's determined to steal that small engine.

Bottom line, my advice...... take the time to remove it and keep it at home.

Nothing will prevent someone from stealing your motor, if they really want it.
I use this to "discourage" theft:

Re: Securing boat motor from theft

I use a lockable wire cable that I run through the transom bracket clamps and then around to the boat handles at the rear of my tin boat. I lock it with a padlock. I then lock my boat on shore with a chain and padlock.

Obviously, as said above, a $15 pair of chain snippers and my boat is gone in 20 seconds but it at least removes the opportunist thief who may not carry a pair of those in their pockets at the time. This also serves to ensure that if my motor happens to pop off my transom while enroute, it doesn't end up dropping to the bottom of the lake. I also have the oldest motor and most dented boat on the lake, which I think helps in my quest for retaining the vessel.

I have also seen people put a larger padlock through the holes on both of their transom clamps. The idea here is it prevents a thief from unwinding them and since they are most likely tight on the transom, the motor is secure to the boat.

Better to take motor with you and will not be stolen.. A few years ago at one lake that I use to fish there was a string of motors being stolen off sail boats moored in the bays. The thief's would saw through the transom and take motors even if they had locks.

Now we have battery powered Sawzalls to make that easier. Used to be they used an axe. Too noisy

I come from new york city, there is nothing that will stop them from taking it if they want it. You should see the locks and chains the bike messengers have and they still find a way to defeat them, in broad daylight no less with people everywhere and they do it fast.

I keep row boats chained all over the new york coty reservoirs. These are in the woods.

Stay with me I have a point and a suggestion.

What I do is make my boats look less desirable than the next guys to keep them from being stolen. I have added body filler patches to pretend the boat has multiple leaks, spray painted zebra strips in different colors all over the boat to make it more identifiable if it were to be taken.

Im sure you could think of some creative stuff to make them think its not worth taking.

Hell leave a note on it reading "Bill sorry I missed you, I tested your engine looks like you have no compresstion in any cylinder. This will need a total rebuild call me and let me know what you would like to do next.

Also for even more piece of mind how about getting a rider off you house insurance or something incase it does happen.
