hey everyone, new guy here! been searching through older posts..great info! I think i have it figured out, but was hoping someone with more expertise would chime in.

Quick history...1988 force 85hp removed running from bad bayliner w/rotten floors. installed by myself on 1969 16' starcraft. Started the motor for the first time in lake..took off well...varied throttle for about 5minutes around boat launch. all seemed well. Took off towards the "sand bar" hangout spot and motor started to lose speed like throttling down...pulled throttle back to neutral and engine died. tried key switch and starter would not engage. turned key to "on/run" position and jumped starter and engine turned over and idled. as soon as throttle was moved into gear..engine died. did this several times..however I did move carb linkage up at the motor and engine reved up fine...but again as soon as put into gear it died...got towed back. :(

after reading MANY posts on here...A mech. tested the following.. spark at #1 and #3, none at #2. knowing that it could be a coil...I swapped coils with no change. did not know how to check cd boxes as the rear box has different wire colors than the front and was tentative at trying to swap leads and doing it wrong (they are fairly expensive) so instead i decided to test the "trigger" that the same boat mech. that I took it to said he thought it might be the trigger but it was more than he wanted to get into. so, I removed the wires in pairs and tested ohms...across first set of grn/orn I got 50ohms, second set=50ohms and third set red/wht=50 ohms...so I concluded its good. so then I tested the stator...it has 6 pairs of wires...I was told not to bother with testing the grn w/yel stripes as they are for charging (thanks forum) so I stuck to the two sets of yellow/blue , the first set I tested I got 790ohms, but the second set I got was 0 ohms. this tells me it has an open circuit correct? The problem I am having is this....if the front cd box controls the #1 & #2 cylinders then why is Cylinder #1 firing? I did not test the spark myself yet...plan to soon, have to buy a tester. Maybe the mech. is wrong? wouldn't both cylinders not fire because of no stator signal/volt transfer? I have ordered a new stator from outboard ignition (again thanks forum!) also a manual. does the stator go in just one way? I am asuming that the wire sets need to go to specific places, I know the blues go together but the yellows are separated. Any information would be greatly appreiciated! thanks Scott

Re: seeking confirmation

You do the compression test yet??
Do that and get a spark tester.
$6 at auto zone.It measures the spark.should be about 7/16 -9/16
Do this and post the results.

Your post is very hard to read. You need to break it up and put in a paragraph or two.

Re: seeking confirmation

Because the blue wires are connected together, 1/2 of the CD box is still getting power--in your case #1 cylinder.

In a pinch, the single set of good stator windings can be used to run both CD boxes. I have done this. The engine will start and run, at least at idle, but I don't know if it will run at partial or full throttle--have never tested that yet.

Re: seeking confirmation

sorry if my post was hard to read, certainly didnt want that. Anyway, did comp test myself, roughly around 130psi on all 3 cylinders, so thats good news. I have not done the spark test just yet...have to hit the store to buy one. will repost after spark test! thanks

spark test is in.... spark at #1, nothing at #2 or #3. Not sure how this is entirely possible. I have one set of bad stator wires, this I know...could half of the front cd box be bad and all of the rear box? I did notice that the coil packs for 2 and 3 dont exactly have that distinctive "snap" onto the plugs or the tester.....maybe I should swap coils 1 and 2 and see if I get spark at #2?

Re: seeking confirmation

WOW, just did some serious wire tracedown....found some interesting things. The front CD box has wires going to both the #1 and #3 coils...the rear CD box is feeding the #2 coil....this is wrong..correct? plus the wires on the second CD box dont match anything on the motor wiring diagram. Should I even attempt to list where the wires go? dont want to make this post hard to read. I will say that the wires on the rear CD box are the ones that dont match...they are brn/blu, wht/r, wht/g, blu/r, blu/brn, brn/y, wht/y,wht/o, b, b/y is this from another motor? 125hp or maybe a 50hp? confused....

Re: seeking confirmation

On some they came with later colors???
Some come with solid, like blue, orange green etc.
On the block is a wiring diagram.
That is all you need to make sure it's wired right.
When messing with ANY connection.Replace it right then.
The wires on the stator/trigger have rubber boots and they look great. But can be broken and still not pull out of the rubber.
TAKE PICTURES if your worried.J

Re: seeking confirmation

yeah, pics are great....but if its hooked up wrong to start with......yikes. The wiring diagram I speak of is on top of the motor itself, but it references wire colors that my rear cd box doesn't have. I ordered a manual for it, so that should help. I also just scored on ebay, I got 3 good cd boxes, 7 good coils, stator, trigger, wiring harness for 276.00 ...so with all these parts I hope to have it up and running soon. will post back with results ...or questions, lol

Re: seeking confirmation

The wires come out of the back of the CD in certain places.
Compare the wires to the other pack.
Then start putting them in the right spot.
