seeking knowledge about a 240a-280 outdrive? in 78 westerner..im a harley guy thats new to boats

In search of some O.G. knowledge.. I got this boat free on craigslist. 78 westerner with motor thats got half sticker torn so im assuming it looks like it says 240a? and on the outdrive it says 280 on it. now i connected a few obvious wires, flushed the gas lines, and freshened up the carb because its a holly and it fired up.. but i dont think its sucking water to cool the engine.. how can i tell? what are some things i should check so i dont completely blow this motor? and what things should i keep an eye out for?

I think that motor should have the raw water pump mounted on the crank shaft. The impeller is inside it and should be replaced.

Use muffs on the outdrive, don't just put the drive in a bucket

Volvos draw the water from the out drive. The sea water pump has a rubber impeller that needs water so it does not burn up. There is a hose that goes to the transom connected to the suction side of the pump, disconnect it and place it in a bucket of water along with a garden hose suppling water.
Try to post a picture of the engine and drive which will help us with any information you may need.
Tap of the inner transom to check if it is rotted, before you start pouring $ into the boat.
