Seized outdrive

Today I pulled my Volvo penta 275 outdrive because it wasn’t turning or going into gear. The boat has been sitting for about 5 years and both the bellows were rotted and holding some water. It is seized up good and I suspect it’s just rust that’s holding things up. Is it possible to tear down an outdrive to the point of removing internals and removing all rust? Or is this a waste of time and I should just buy another. They’re very pricey so I’d like to avoid spending so much money.

You will not know if it is going to be worth it until you open up the drive and see what the internal parts look like.

If the outdrive has the correct amount of oil in it, then that would be a good sign. If not . . .

could just need a new u-joint shaft
could need a complete re-build
when it was drained, did oil come out or rusty water/oil/goo?

I bought a boat with a seized outdrive. The previous owner took it out at the end of season and parked it up without checking it over. Oil seals had gone, oil out, sea water in. Left sitting for several months and the damage was done. It was totally seized solid. I removed it and split it down into its separate sections, all of which were seized. I just wanted to see if the damage was possibly confined to one section. Stripping down and rebuilding is an option, if you have the tools and know how. You would probably be replacing various bearings etc. Not really for the faint hearted, assuming you can even strip it down.

So I’ve taken pretty much every section apart and they were all seized individually but I have them freed up for the most part. There was absolutely no oil in the outdrive and flakes of rust everywhere. Everything is turning now and I’m going to start reassembling tomorrow. The only issue I’m having with is the gear selection. Anyone know of a place that sells sections of outdrives? I’ve checked eBay and they only sell complete outdrives when I only need parts.

Don't know where you're based, but "Coastal Rides" in the UK are a good place to start.

You'll need special tools to rebuild.
Put it back together and run it.
Might last 20min. or 2 years??
Just make sure you pressure test the drive.
