If anyone can enlighten this newbie, thanks. I have a 50hp Evinrude which recently is stuck in forward. Reading some past posts I think I should have 6-8 ohms in the blue and green going down into the lower unit, I have 14ohms in the blue wire and 18 in the green. Will I need to replace the coil? Will this entail tearing the gearbox down or are these electrical parts out of the oil? Anyone know of a link to see a schematic of this?

Did you check the Lower unit fluid level? Put in fresh fluid "Type C" and see if it solves the problem. Start on the easy fix first.

Those are pretty high readings, if your meter is accurate. Kind of unusual too. I suggest verifying the solenoids are bad by a second test by bypassing the shift switch with a jumper to the blue and green gearcase wires to see if that will make it shift. At any rate, the solenoids are below a cover, forward of the water pump. They can be replaced by removing the lower unit as for a water pump job, then remove the solenoid cover.

I did check voltage to the leads at the bottom of the engine compartment, with the key on I get 12 volts so the switches seem good, I changed the the oil which was clean anyway, so it's new and full.

Coils usually short and burn open. The resistance of a coil usually does not increase.

I'll recheck my numbers tomorrow. Would 10-11volts be to low to get shifting to occur, starts fine though. Thanks

Re: Selectric shift help

I dropped the lower unit, it slipped out of my hold and broke the wiring. I now have 20 ohms in the one wire (no stripe black) and 6 ohms on the other wire (white striped black) leading into the coil housing. It looks like the 20 ohm (no stripe) wire had been pinched and may have been broken by the wiring brackets. Will 20 ohms be too far out of specs to work? Thanks!

Yep, you need to replace the wire. Get the real thing, it needs to be waterproof. Electricity and water don't mix.
