selenoid or starter

I have a 1996 tracker 40 hp, when I turn the key sometimes it will start and sometimes do nothing. I took cover off and had my wife turn key while I listened. It would click at the selenoid and do nothing eles. What would be the problem the selenoid or starter?

Most likely it is bad connections or cables connecting the battery to the engine. Take them off, clean them and reinstall.

You need to put a meter or test light on the post of the starter motor. If it indicates voltage when you turn the key (and the starter doesn't spin), then it's the starter motor. If you have the 'click' and no voltage, it's the solenoid.
