doin mine for the first time, has the self clean lever which locks oven and self clean button on top of range oven, how long does it take? Any safety issues, smoke alarm went off, it smokes once in awhile when I bake, now digital clock shows 3:27, it always just shows correct time, I assume it has 3 hrs and 27 mins left to self clean? house only 8 yrs old, comments would be great, Thanks!

Procedure takes quite a while and runs at high temps. It is designed to crystallize any build up in the oven. While doing that, it may produce some smoke which sensitive alarms may object to. We can only assume the the oven manufacturer knew what they were doing when they incorporated that feature. The fact that your alarm sounded with other cooking operations shows that it is overly sensitive and maybe in a wrong location.

Is this the first time in 8 years that you have tried to clean it? If so it will smoke. The cleaning process is high heat which burns off the cooking residue. It is normal for the clean cycle to set off the smoke alarms, mine does. The cycle time is quite long(hours)so I try to do my cleaning on colder days to take advantage of the heat gain. It can get kinda smelly so I distance myself by working in the yard or garage. I would not feel safe doing it while away from the home....things get quite warm.

worked out well, but took like 3.75 hours!!!???? I've only owned this place since last Oct., yeah I didnt feel safe until it was done :)
How often should this be done? Oven wasnt like really filthy, but would smoke a bit when on high bake temps, so I figured a cleaning was in order :)

We clean our about 2 x's a year unless we boil something out into oven. Make sure you wipe the ash out of the oven with a damp cloth.

If you are really careful about spills once a year may be often enough. I always do it on a day when I can open the door and the window to let the stink escape. That makes it a spring and or fall project.

Baked a huge pan of stuffed peppers the other day, they spilled, bad.

Hoping for cool weather so I can leave a couple windows open and the attic fan on.

If I would have remembered to line the bottom with foil like my Mom did, I wouldn't have even half this mess.
