the starter will work if i hot wire it to batt, but it just clicks when i hit starter switch. the last few times out it worked but sometimes the starter did not turn off. how to i determin if its the seliniod. how can i test seliniod to see if this is my problem. it does make noise back on engine but does not turn starter on. again i checked starter and it worked red straight to batt?

Re: SELINIOD QUESTION

Welcome to iboats double o seven.
Use a jumper wire and jump from the large 12vdc cable on the starter solenoid to the small + post on the solenoid. Don't jump to the small post with the black wire on it but the small post with (probably) a red and yellow wire. That should cause the starter to spin.

c/6
Hooty

Re: SELINIOD QUESTION

Not a jumper cable, just a wire. 16 gauge insulated wire about 6" long is all ya need.

c/6
Hooty

Re: SELINIOD QUESTION

It could be the solenoid or it could be the starter swtich or something in between.

c/6
Hooty

Re: SELINIOD QUESTION

Ok, jump form the cable from the battery to the post with the yellow wire. Switch off. If the solenoid engages and spins the starter, the solenoid is ok. If it doesn't engage and spin the starter, the solenoid could be bad or you could have a loose or corroded connection at the battery, solenoid or starter. Start at the battery and clean and tighten all the cable connections all the way to the starter.

c/6
Hooty

Re: SELINIOD QUESTION

You only need about 6" of wire. You're not jumping from the battery, just from the big cable from the battery on the side of the solenoid to the small post. Thet're less then 2" apart.

c/6
Hooty

Re: SELINIOD QUESTION

Take the old one with you so you get one with the two small posts. If it still doesn't work, you've got a bad cable connection.

g'luck & c/6
Hooty
