Seliod question

Why do mercruiser's (and others) have a starter seliod and a slave seliod? I know the starter seliod is for kicking the starter, what purpose and function is served by the slave seliod?

It keeps the voltage drop going to the starter solenoid low

Buy useing it a much shorter wire powers the starter solenoid and the long run from the key switch only has to power the slave

On most runabouts the slave isn't all that necessary. It's on houseboats and such with long wiring harnesses where it's most needed.

Thanks for the info. My boat currently does not have one installed (not since I have owned her anyway) What was said make sense now. Where is the best and safest location to install it?
