Re: Sentimental Value

first order a manual from kencooke.com (brp-evinrude, click english, click part & access, click literature bottom right. this get you to kencooke.com, follow the prompts) you will need the model number off the motor. don't be shocked they are pricey, but if you are determined to restore this engine get ready for pricey.
are you mechanically inclined, and type of experience. this helps us know your level.
get this manual read it make it your best friend, pretend you are going to be tested on it. the high score gets a running engine. get back with me. ther maybe some things you can do while waiting on the manual.

What were the compression numbers? You may try a decarb and see if the numbers come up before you tear into it. I would pick up a compression gauge at your local auto parts store and see for yourself.

Re: Sentimental Value

TD has given some good advice mark. OEM service manual is a must.

I would be concerned mostly with the "low compression". You need to find out how low. Basic rule of thumb...."cylinder compressions should be within 10 > 15% of each other". Generally, compressions over 90psi is considered good.

Sometimes low compression can be caused by sticky rings...caused by carbon build up. Decarboning sometimes helps.

Again, start with the compression. If it is low, find out why. Without compression, no use in addressing the other prolems until the compression issue is resolved.

Re: Sentimental Value

Lots of those 55s out there with bum lower units, so it might pay to find one with a good powerhead rather than sink a boatload of money into the one you have. It might be as easy as swapping the powerheads to take care of that issue. Also might be able to simply re-ring it if it's just tired and nothing is scorched inside.

Make it a fun project. Involve your kids (if you have any). Invite a sibling or buddy over to assist or be the beer keeper.

As was pointed out - a good service manual is a must.

I'm really glad you got it running. I would be concerned about that 90 lbs though. It could get very much worse very quickly. And that would be the end.

Probably the most detailed photo library of a boat project that I have ever seen. Very nice to see such an intense project. I had to go to photo's link, then in the upper right hand corner click on "back to albums" link to find this album.

Pretty cool myspace page also.
