Changing impeller on my 68 Merc 120's OD.
Installing new impeller. Drained oil & is in fwd.
I have the trim anode off.
2 5/8th nuts off from UNDER the unit
2 5/8th nuts off on port & starboard
1 5/8th nut forward closest to stern backed way off to "catch it" when it comes off..

It wont budge..Wiggled, jiggled and rubber malleted...

Any old timer tips that would help?

Thanks

Re: seperating Merc lower

remove the trim tab and look in the tab pocket, will be either a hex bolt or an allen head bolt.

There was 2 fwd of the trim tab, in a recessed area.
They have been removed.

Re: seperating Merc lower

there is 6 fasteners that hold it together. you've accounted for 5. the 6th is inside the hole where the anode was. take the anode off and look up into the hole where it was. there you'll find the 6th fastener. the bolt that holds the anode on, is not a fastener that holds the two halves together... it only holds the anode on...

No its up under the tab. there are 5 nuts and 1 bolt that hold the halves together. (not including the annode bolt)

Thanks guys..

Yes it was in fact in the same recessed area where the anode fits up into.
A 5/8 Allen head just like the one to remove the anode itself.

It's off and now I can get to that darn impeller...

Anybody ever use any headgasket goo between the two halves when reinstalling the units??

I put a little grease on it just in case it begins to corrode, not for sealing...no need.

Just make sure that the little rubber washer is still there around the oil hole on the top surface.

You HAVE missed one. After you take off the rear annode, look up into the hole it exposed. there is another bolt that is screwed in under there.
