Serial Number Location?

Where are some places that a serial number likes to hide on a 1975 888 model mercruiser. My manual has 2 different serial numbers for that model. One is (to 4169596) and the other (4169597-up). Haven't found any numbers like these on the engine yet. Thanks

Clymer Manual says it is on a stamped plate either at the rear top of the cyl block between the intake manifold and flywheel housing or at the end of the cyl head at the rear of the engine.<br /><br />Hope it's not the latter!
