Serial number where?

Hi,
I have a Mercury 40 hp 4 cylinder, two stroke, oil injection, long shaft, electric start and tilt. I think it's a 1990's motor, and have been trying to confirm that by checking the serial number. But I can't find the serial number, and the motor didn't come with a manual. I've looked on the swivel bracket, both sides, and on the tilt bracket, but it isn't there. Is the number on a stamped metal plate, or is it on a sticker? Is the serial number stamped anywhere else, like on the block? Thanks for any advice you can offer on this.

There should be a welch plug on the starboard side of the block with the serial number.

Thanks,
While I was down looking for the plug, I finally saw the sticker with the serial number on the inside of the tilt bracket. As far as I can tell, the number is O9185067. Which doesn't seem to correspond to the "two letters at the front" string which people mention as being common with Mercury. If I use just the last six digits, it looks like a 1995 ELPTO, which is the configuration, and about the age I was told.

It doesn't correspond to the Mercury two letter format as s/ns beginning with 9 are made in Belgium. Some of them were made for the US market. But the s/n you are showing comes up as a 1977 YOM so something is wrong with the s/n if you believe it is a 1995. Do you think the 9 could be a letter G which it would have to be to be a US made engine from 1995.

Can you post a picture of the data plate and confirm it with the disc on the engine which looks like this?

Re: Serial number where?

I went back down with a mirror to reflect some bright light in on the sticker, and was able to see the difference between what I thought was a 9, and is in fact a "G." So the serial number is:
OG 185067
Which, going by the list I found somewhere, is a 1995 4 cyl 40 hp ELPTO, which is what I was told it is. So, unless I've made a mistake on this that someone can correct me on, my next step is to get a manual and try to figure out why it isn't charging the battery.

Your mercury service manual part number is 90-814676R1, it covers engine models 30 JET/40 (4 CYL.) - 1989 through 1997 model years.

Yes serial number 0G185067 is a 1995, Model Number 1040412RD.

Just google the part number, also try inputting the part number into ebay. Obtaining and using the part number, you will find all kinds of price ranges out there on the internet for almost anything you need in life.;)

Good luck.:)
