Okay heres my issue with my 1972 mercury 1150 i had it two days ago and it ran fine, today put the boat in went to start it which it did and ran for about 3 mins or so then quit and wouldnt restart. i took the plug out and checked to see if they all have spark which they do also did a compression check finally #1 cyl= 135psi #2 cyl=135psi #3 cyl=135 #4 cyl=145psi #5 cyl=135psi and #6 cyl=135psi.. so i know the compression is good. i also checked the fuel pump to see if its getting fuel which is found out the hard way still have the taste in my mouth dont ask how. started looking at the timing belt and noticed it was real loose (is it suppose to be) and thought maybe it jumped timing so i took some pics and need someone to tell me if its correct or way off. theres two notches that you can see lined up and the TDC is way off to the left of it. im on my way to get a timing gun but was just wondering if these are the two notches that you have to line up for timing please help me i really wanna go fishing its a nice day

remove the nut on cover to belt pully. look close for a small arrow .it should point at TDC mark on flywheel. careful when turning it doesn't start. the belt does not look loose

Re: Serious help needed

That is not right. First remove the distributor pully cover. Next install the cowling since that is where the timing mark is. Now set the TDC mark on the flywheel to match the timing mark on the cowling support. Now the cast arrow on the distributor pully should point at the dot or punch mark on the flywheel, to the right of TDC.

The belt will have a bit of play, about 1/8 inch in either direction, or less. If it turns more than that, it is bad.

yea the belt can be pushed in about 1/2 inch or more. but i talked to a guy and he said the best way to do it is get a dial gauge and find TDC...zero the gauge then find .464....and reposition the fly wheel to the distributor flywheel. also last night i found my main issue why it was dying...not to happy about it either cause i looked at it quite a few times

Well, the timing marks on the cowl support are not adjustable, so you can do the .464" adjustment, but resetting the timing mark is not possible. The flywheel only can be installed 8 ways. Those ways are 45* apart.
