decarbed my 1991 evinrude V8 for the first time yesterday. followed the directions exactly. after
flushing the motor for 20 minutes after the procedure(10 hours later)i changed the plugs with new properly gapped champions. took the boat to the lake and all went wrong! boat won't rev over 3000 rpm's and warning buzzer starts beeping and it get's louder and louder. i'm getting plenty of oil(smokes like a forrest fire when started) and have 10 psi of water going through the motor. my motor has sat outside for 1 week without the cover on it (painting) in the rain. could my S.L.O.W be shorted out from moisture? thanks for any help...james

Hi Hammer....

Are ya' sure the engine isn't overheating, one side or the other? With the engine warmed up and running, you should be able to touch the flat area on top behind each head and not have to jerk your finger off because it's to hot. It will get uncomfortable after a few seconds.

i think it's the port tempature switch. with the engine not running and out of the water: i turn on the key and i get the beep, beep, beep beep that wont stop! when i unhook 1 of the 2 wires on the temp switch, the beep stops. this is on a cold motor! is the switch shot? thanks...james

I think you're correct in asuming it's a moisture-related problem. The sender can be checked with an ohmeter via the manual, as can the over temp switch if so equipped (cuts or kills RPM durring overheat).
As a last resort, start the motor on the muffs, at night, with the bonnet off, and look for visable arcing from coils, plug wires, plugs.
Wet = dead short at 30,000+ volts.

Second 12footers reply. On a warm/hot day, let the engine set in the sun with the hood off and let it dry out. Please, no hair dryers.
