Seriously considering a Yamaha to replace the Force

Now the Bayliner has a 1985 85hp Force with no power tilt or trim. The motor is either all the way up, or all the way down. No inbetween, manual or otherwise. That, as you can image, is a real problem trying to get in shallow areas and alone is enough reason for me to want to upgrade the motor.

I don't know much about Yamaha motors other than they have a good reputation, especially the 3 cylinder 90hp model, which would make a good replacement for the Force 85hp. I like the oil injected models having the oil tank built in under the cowel, although I'm not specifically looking for an oil injected model.

I would like to keep the Bayliner stock throttle/shift control (I believe its actually a Uflex unit) that uses standard cables. I see iboats lists the telefelex cable for Yamaha as being a standard control cables. Teleflex lists adapters for standard cables to most manufacturers, so it appears that the correct ends are available.

So I have a few questions:

What type cable end connection is used at the power head? Clevis? Ball joint? Other?

If I order stock yamaha control wire harness (688-8258A-20-00 the wire cable that comes with a control box) what type of switch will I need to add to the dash to run the power tilt/trim? Thinking of a marine grade momentary on/off/on switch. Sound right?

Will the Bayliner buzzer under the dash work for the over heat warning?

For a fuel connector, does the 90 hp take the 3/8 or 5/16" connector?

Battery cables: Does the Yamaha battery cables mount using the common crimped on loop end?

Tach? Not sure if the Bayliner tach that works with the 20 pole Force has a switch for different pole settings. Its a faria tach. May have to order a new tach.

Tilt/trim gauge - Does the Yamaha have a sender for one?

I know these are a lot of questions, and it would probably be easier to just get a Yamaha controller, but I would prefer to keep the OEM Bayliner controls at this point.

Thanks in advance for your help.

ditch the bayliner stuff.
if its flush mount you will need the flush mount yamaha box and ign harness and keyswtich panal assy.
if its side mount a standard 703 box with trim will be all you need.
then buy the correct 6y5 digital tach and its all plug and play and everyone has fun.
BTW, no such thing as standard cables.
yamaha uses the 3300 style cables that some others used as well.
best I remember your setup has the shift and throttle backwards from a yamaha and the shift stroke will need to be changed.
best I remember the yamaha 90 uses a pull pull setup so make sure your old controls pull for both functions. the stroke length I cant remember.
its all in the rigging guide and you should consult it before any purchasing.

I haven't ordered the motor yet. Waiting for the model number and some details. I think I'll take your advice and go with Yamaha controls. Will check the Yam website to see if the rigging doc is available for download.

Hey, Mark. That 90 Yamaha 2 stroke oil injected motor was the first Yamaha I owned. Bought it new in '86, owned it for ten years and what a great motor. ALL I ever did was basic maintenance. Impeller every two years, new plugs and lower unit oil every year and flushed it every time out.
I was amazed at the fact nothing ever broke or let me down. I did drain the battery once and found it had a pull cord stashed under the cowl. One good pull and we were off and running.
That motor sold me on Yamaha, I have now owned three and all have been as trouble free as my first. Good luck with whatever you buy!
